- kouba link, 240 pounds with heavier spring on rear shock. About a month ago I bottomed out for the first time on some big rolling sandy woops. See the dent on the inside of muffler and shiny spots on rear brake caliper, they go together. I am now looking at how to lower my shock properly without the kouba lowering link. Lex on here mentioned something about a spacer somewhere on the shock, and I've found superplushsuspension but haven't made any phone calls. The lowered bike has made a huge difference for me in what kind of terrain I can ride. Off in the boonies by myself I feel like I can waddle through just about anything (except super steep), instead of just having to "go for it" or turn around in stuff like rocky side slopes, deep dry sand, big boulders, or deep washed out ruts. Pro waddle.
Does that stage one pull kinda crappy in 1st around 2500-3500rpm? Flat? mine does, trying to figure out if that’s just what the cam does (read that a couple places) or if i need to screw around with my jetting... i’m running highest octane ETA: wow not sure how i pulled that off, but somehow replied to a....thirteen year old post? was scrolling around and saw all these names i’d never seen...who are all these new guys?! can’t figure out how to delete it the post now, oops. still curious about flat spots in first and the hot cam if anyone’s still listening haha
Hey! Copying an image from PackinDirts build from a month or so ago. He has this brace for Acerbis tanks he really likes, only catch is they're built custom by a company not in the US. Good finishing, perfect bolt on, survivor of hard dismounts on TAT. PackinDirt will have to update us with the price (or I will when I hear back from them) but he said "appropriate for the build quality." Any other takers here that want to gang up on shipping? I'll be contacting them later today and figured I might order five or six to consolidate shipping if there's interest. Build: https://advrider.com/f/threads/packindirts-2016-honda-xr650l-build-report.1414103/ DBA website: https://dirtbikeafrica.com/ They also have a badass looking subframe brace that appears to work with FMF pipes, but money conversion says they're $165 yikes!
mcma You get to see all kinds coming your way, blown engine pic's etc,wild.. Looking at online prices a new c. basket ain't cheap. XRHondafan If memory serves me right..yes.
I machined up a 12mm spacer that mates with the inside of the shock's seal head and is secured with set screws. Based upon what I'd read 12mm out of the shock stroke translates to 41mm out of rear wheel travel. I compensated by installing a heavier spring. I also shortened the front forks internally by 41mm to match the amount that the rear end was lowered. There is a youtube video out there somewhere that shows how a KTM was lowered with a spacer that lives on the outside of the seal head - between it and the seal head's retaining ring. That approach didn't require disassembling the shock, just pushing the seal head into the shock body to make room for the spacer. edit:
What's wrong with the stock mounting tabs? I've never heard of any breaking during crashes. If you really want to rid yourself of $165, I'll send you my mailing address to send the check to. To delete a post, look at the bottom of your posts. See the words, Edit, Delete, Report"?
Why do you say ‘tight woods’? There is a myriad of uses of the big XR. Tight woods is probably one of the only non uses - for gearing as well as weight. On more open twin track where you can use the gears 15/42 is perfect.
one of the tabs is already snapped off on mine, so it’s only got the one arm. also those acerbis tanks in my experience don’t always line up perfect so having a bracket i can fine tune is appealing. also the $165 is for a subframe reenforcement that fits the fmf, not the bracket. bracket is $60 something
Hi John, DBA are great guys to deal with. I ordered a center stand from them after Cigar Mike went out of business a few years back. They have a way to reduce your shipping greatly. I would reach out to them and ask about this. If you need me to, I might be able to dig through some emails and find a name for you. But, I think you just need to shoot them a quick email at their info address or whatever and they will be able to help. If you get hung up on this, please just let me know. Or PM me.
With the pictures of the bracket, a vise, a drill, some files and a hacksaw someone out to be able to whip one of those out in a couple of hours. Three hours if beer is involved.
A piece of old bed frame, angle grinder, bolts, nuts and paint, you're done! As far as Acerbis tank fitment, the two tabs Acerbis supplies can be tweaked slightly to make them fit the stock tabs or any aftermarket tab. I'd they aren't lining up, the tank isn't seated properly. The biggest issue is getting the tank on the bike...which isn't that big s deal IMO.
Made the tank supports out of a 1/2"conduit pinched in the vice drilled and rounded the corners = free Frame supports scrap 1/2" bar stock and a little bit of time =free
First off im not a drinker so thats more money and time to spend on the bike be it riding or working on it. I would rather be working on the bikes that setting on the couch watching tv anytime. I would rather build what i can rather than pay someone for way over priced parts and labor. Why go to work so i can work 8 hours just to give my money to someone else for their time when i have lot of free time of my own and in the end say yeah i built that myself. And believe me the more time i spend in the shop or riding my bikes is my way of working on my relationship at home . If we spend to much time together that isn't good for either of us.
Working on stuff is therapeutic for me. And I can always get the results that I want. That's priceless compared to my last 20 years as an IT manager. Keeping business management and technical teams happy at the same time was a fucking challenge of epic proportions. And the hours sucked.
Two equally valid viewpoints! I had an old professor from Germany whose specialty was Perspectivalism (Perspectivalismus?): truth at least sometimes depends on your viewing angle. For sure no one can accuse Coffman300 of not getting enough ride time. I aspire to both his riding and his fabbing skills. Beautiful subframe brackets! There's something to be said of taking pride in what you make, just as there is in searching out and acquiring superior work and happily rewarding the fabricator with compensation from your own particular different kind of work. I'm doing the lion's share of the restoration on my GB, but I was happy to pay Dubya to take beat-up 30-year-old old hubs and do this with them: And some absolute artist in Japan is taking old broken 30 y.o. gas caps and making them brand new: Super happy to reward these guys for what they are able to do. Dunno if the DBA bracket would be worth it to me or not, but probably depends on my own time, skill set, and money in pocket.
