If you look carefully you’ll see screened holes every third block. The owner wants eyebrow vents to match the rest of the house rather than a ridge vent as well. The demo sucked, this was a roof before, it had to come off, and all the original ceiling joists ran the opisit direction of the new floor joists, so they had to be removed while keeping the ceiling intact. I was mostly successful, I think I only stuck a foot thru twice.

@CDN Rick This is over the main house. Up against that temporary knee wall under the rafters is a 18’ 6x12 glue lam, Another 18’ 6x12 for shear next to a 4x12 glue lam closer to me. All those tie into a 6x12 glue lam on the right that runs perpendicular that is covered by the sub floor at this point. One more 4x12 glue lam for the staircase you can see on the left along with the hanger. Pretty cool project, super heavy beams. That part of the project is way more time consuming than clients ever expect.

I’m always jealous of how nice the framing lumber is in the USA. Every single stick of Canada Grade #1 get’s exported to you guys. Best we ever see here on site is a mix of #2 and #3.

What is the goal of the project? Add a second story?

Yes, about 800’ sq. 2 bedrooms, 2baths and a balcony. 9’ 2x6 walls, tied to the posts that we put in the existing 1st floor walls and sit on beefed up foundation, all tied together with hardware. It’s not pictured, but the 6x12 nearest the stairs runs 6’ past the walls over the garage (left in the earlier pic) that will have a 6’ 4x12 collector block tied to the rear wall of the garage, which we will have to rebuild as a ply sheer wall, all fir earthquake code. There’s will also Be a 2x6 interior wall with ply sheathing that runs from the bottom plate to rafter that also sits on that 6x12 for sheer.

That almost looks like hurricane construction with the tie plates.

Simpson is going to make a nice little sum on this project fir sure. Since we have earthquakes and wind everything is crazy overbuilt.

Nice work man. Clean framing. Details like the “L” stud in the corner for additional drywall backing show someone who cares about their work.

I wish I had taken more pics but I spent about 5 years working for a company that specializes in second stories on existing homes. Usually the clients didn’t want the whole main floor ripped apart as well, But this one wanted nearly everything redone. You can see some engineered joists lying on the driveway ready to start framing the new second deck.

We would usually cut the roof itself off in big pieces with a gas powered stone saw that had one of those gnarly carbide chunk blades the firemen use.... We'd cut it apart in a morning, each guy taking a piece a bit bigger than the last to show the crew how strong he was... Took years for the chiropractor to fix me from that...

I used my worm drive with about 6 blades to chop it up to take it off.
I know I’m too old for carrying big chunks, so I had Miguel do that stuff and the insulation. After the first day he came back with gloves, coveralls, a face shield and a respirator.
