I had the Silver Wing pictured to the left for a couple of years and stupidly traded it away in 2009 for a BMW G650GS. I bought a 2014 Honda NC700XD to get that automatic scooter feeling back, it ain't the same. That's why I'm looking at the Xmax 300.

Remind me of a quote from the movie Contact (1997): "Why build one when you can have two at twice the price? Only, this one can be kept secret. Controlled by Americans, built by the Japanese subcontractors."

Regardless, congrats! Now you're not missing out on fun riding in either place.

I don't get that at all. I was comparing a 300cc scooter to a 500cc scooter. And you bring in a 750cc motorcycle as a better justification? Keep this in mind:

    • Difference of 200cc vs 450cc
    • Chain vs belt (zero cleaning & maintenance with belt)
    • Underseat storage vs no underseat storage (ok the NC750X got a small storage room up front)
    • Keyless vs no keyless
Does the NC750X DCT even got Cruise Control, which is what triggered my question in the first place?

My mission is everything, from twisting forest roads to highways, city traffic and all in betweens. The XMAX does all this, personally I think it's a good option for every journey I've travelled so far. If I have good time and weather is nice, I stay off highways and go for more entertaining routes. But once in a while I end up on long distance travel on highways, and it would be very nice to have cruice control then.

If Smax riders are willing to pay for it, why not? I guess it depends on how common long distance highway riding is for the various models and sizes. Maybe it is uncommon to use XMAX for this purpose? I don't know what others use the Smax or other bikes for, but I use XMAX for pretty much everything (except off-road dirt and long gravel roads).

I wasn't responding to you directly tbh. Just sharing a thought on the TMAX because it came up, and I very clearly labelled it as a personal opinion. Chill, bro.

If it breaks into pieces, sharp pieces, it might be more significant than you think.

I am spoiled and want cruise control on all my bikes too. My RT has it and was part of the reason I bought it. My arthritic wrists need to relax to make those high mileage rides. Cruise control is easiest to add to a bike that has "throttle by wire" , so the XMAX probably won't get it unless it gets the electronic throttle.

Keep in mind that the XMAX was not designed for the US market and how we ride. The XMAX is made in Yamaha plants in France and Indonesia for the European and Asian markets where the requirements are different. I doubt if a cruise control is much of a consideration and they will sell far more scooters there than here in the US. In fact the XMAX as a 250 and 125 has been sold there for over 10 years. We are just an after thought. Lucky they even brought it over here. Honda has apparently decided we are not worth the effort and has not brought over the redesigned Forza.

you are right about the XMAX... it is a no go forever for this model
but every bike and scooter should have that option
after anti-lock brakes it's the most important electronic assistance a motorcycle can have

Last year, I almost traded my CTX for a Yamaha 900 tracer for the simple reason that it had cruise control. Yup, you need a flyby wire throttle to do it. Frankly I kind of go against the grain, I’m a Huge techy , I don’t mind my bike becoming more complex. I would like to see a much more of a bundled feature options on bikes that would include everything electronic:
    • iPad like display (TFT), (starting to show on some bikes now)
    • true ACTIVE cruise,
    • auto signal cancel,
    • full Bluetooth/CarPlay/android auto/XM
    • oil level sensor,
    • blind spot/lane alert,
    • Adj magnetorheological suspension
    • driving modes,
    • ECM/GPS parking alarm,
    • tire pressure readout,
At these things could be standard on a touring type pkg. Honda is already doing it on their cars now in the US, it includes many of the above items under one option called “Honda sensing”… Nothing on the list above is new, and is being done by some veh mfr now.

And others I’ll think of later… If they can make it reliable on cars, they certainly can do it on bikes.

What octane fuel are people using on the XMax? I've been using 91 or 92, but understand it will use 87 just fine. Which is better for the engine or mileage?

My wife recently bought a new Honda CRV with Honda Sensing. It is pretty amazing stuff and I am sure will pretty soon be standard in most cars. Some of the higher end motorcycles are also incorporating many of the safety and convenience features as well. Over time they will trickle down to the less expensive scooters and motorcycles. Frankly I was surprised the XMAX came with traction control as a standard feature.

I have been using 87 which I think is what Yamaha recommends. No advantage that I can see to using a higher octane. Some will claim all kinds of advantages to using premium but none have been proven from what I have read when used in an engine designed for regular.

I use rec 90 only because I don't ride it often. It's good for marine outboard and can't hurt. I had a Chinese 150 cc scooter that had some problems and I think it's because I didn't use it often enough. One gallon would last around two months therefore the fuel turned into some water.

This is debated on every car forum I’ve ever been on ad infinitum, much like when to change the oil or what wax to use...LOL. I agree, use the octane that the manufacturer recommends, because that’s the way they build the engine and calibrate it. Google the question and read for days.

exception: If I was going to store the bike for a couple months.I’d use 91/93... Because 87 octane does degrade quickly. According to Sunoco website, 87 starts to degrade after three months, 91 grade lasts for nine months. Rec 90 non-ethanol is a perfect choice. So I would use it when I put it away.
