In Lillooet the other day I was told about a gravel route to Lytton (or more accurately a ferry that would take me across the river to Lytton). I gather that out of Lillooet you take the Texas Creek Road, but the lady that I was talking to didn't know any details. She said that it was popular with motorcyclists...does anyone have any info on this? Road conditions, distance, ferry times etc? Thanks, eh!
Greetings, I"ve ridden this route or portions there of a number of times. This is a spectacular section of road, one worth riding that's for sure. Lots of scenic vistas, portions of vibrant red clay and some tight switchbacks make it a fun ride. I actually rode this particular section 2 years ago in mid October, a slight skiff of snow falling. If you hook onto Texas Creek Road just follow that, it will turn to gravel a couple km's South. Once on gravel, you will find it to be very forgiving, easily rideable by a "street" bike with suitable tread. From a navigational standpoint, it is pretty hard to get lost. Just stay on the "main" road ( as indicated by use) and you'll make it to the ferry on your left hand side in about 2 hours or so ( if I remember correctly). You might want to google run times for that little ferry because it services a very small population base and has it's own non-conventional schedule. Are you aware that the road continues South from where you plan on crossing the Fraser via ferry? It too is an outstanding section that can take you to Boston Bar ( due South) or if your feeling adventurous, you can opt for the Harrison Lake ( due South West) route. RP
You da man, SuperP! Thank you - that's just what I needed to know. I'll be riding it next year, am looking forward to it now
Sounds like you rode this (Lytton south to Boston Bar) last year or the year before when the forest fires ravaged the province. So far this year no smoke and minimal fires make for really good riding conditions. If riding this portion in the heat of summer consideration to smoke conditions is always wise due to increased risk/ frequency of forest fires. FYI, Lytton often records the hottest temperatures for the whole country! It holds the record for second hottest day in Canada EVER recorded at 44.4 Celsius. However, one can easily ride this portion of road during the shoulder seasons as well when conditions are less favourable for fires and still very optimal for riding. Don't forget the option to head west when you reach the Nahatlach River and ride the East side of Harrison Lake, a great finish to the ride.
....or turn west onto Texas Creek road, which leads to Molybdenite Lake. We haven't gotten to the lake yet, heard there were washouts on the road up there. Anybody update this?
Tell me a little bit more about your run from Boston Bar to Coalmont? I have ridden Boston Bar to Merritt a number of times and have enjoyed that. I am leaving in early September for some exploration of new areas and upon a quick survey via GOOGLE maps your Coalmont run looks fairly promising.
Can't wait to see what you have for me. Currently soliciting ADVer's to join the ride, if not , then will be going solo.
That road is almost always in rough shape, especially early season.. The 4x4s use it so later in the season it gets packed down a bit more and they tune up some of the slid over sections as well...
The road from the Ferry north to Lillooet is nice shape, travelled this yesterday. We tried to go up the actual Texas creek FSR that goes up to Molybdenite lake and it's a major no go. The first km was as far as we went as there were a couple of good slides, lots of big boulders, the last slide we stopped at was bad and had a cliff full of deep freeze size nuggets ready to come down. With the state of forestry I don't know if this road will be fixed this year. Last time went up here in OCT/18 there was a good slide but passable around 4km.
Springtime it {Molybdenite area} is supposed to be closed to motorized vehicles up there to protect the grizzly bears rearing their young.. I doubt that it gets policed that much, but you never know.. Last year towards the end of summer that road up was not in the greatest shape, with new slides, maybe the 4x4 clubbers will give up on patching it up again..
I was not aware that that road along the Thompson is closed, it was not posted on either end, the gate was open the times we went through.. The people in there were friendly, we chatted with one fellow on a quad for about half hour, others always give a friendly wave and no hostility sensed at all.. However if you say it is off limits and live in the area {area knowledge}, then we will no longer use that route.. Keep in mind that a good portion of the West side of the Fraser from Lillooet towards B.B. also threads through IR parcels , as well as along the Hi Bar Road and the road through Canoe Creek towards Gang Ranch.. The Upper Yalakom has the occasional native blockade, in stopping and chatting with them, they were OK with us going through.. Thanks for the intel..
Interested in some background on this, not doubting you but did this come from the band recently or long standing but not enforced? Or....? Thanks!
FYI, if this current situation continues, some roads or petrol stops further north may not be accessible for those heading out for a ride this spring/summer. https://www.wltribune.com/news/chec...mc-xagtem-canoe-creek-dog-creek-first-nation/ Never hurts to check before heading out. https://sxfn.ca/contact-us/
I have seen BC Gov't "Red Zone" maps of motorized closures in Shulaps and Cayoosh ranges. Moly ridge looks to be outside [se of Cayoosh creek] the red, or am I not seeing the picture clearly?
