Motorcycle Trip Around Qinghai Lake-Episode 1

Last month, a group of motorcycle riders in China finished their 360km motorcycle trip around Qinghai Lake. The Qinghai Lake is the largest lake in China, and it is known as one of the China’s most Great Lakes.
    picture2.jpg
They started their trip from Xining, which has served as a stopover of the Silk Road from the 16th century. Xining is the capital city of Qinghai province in western China, and the largest city on the Tibetan Plateau.

Motorcycle Trip Around Qinghai Lake-Episode 2

At the beginning, the journey was very comfortable with good road conditions, sunny day and beautiful scenery all the way. Actually, they have been looking forward to the trip around Qinghai Lake for many years, and they were so excited that they could not help to sing songs loudly when looked at the sunset and felt the wind's touch. Escaping the hustle and bustle of the cities, it not only refreshed and relaxed the brain but freed the spirit at the same time, though it was very tired and exhausted after riding all day.

However, the journey was not always easy, especially for the journey around Qinghai Lake. For the next few days, they have suffered heavy rain, hail and windy day. Beside that, the road conditions were not always satisfactory, stunning mountain roads with many curves were very common.

Motorcycle Trip Around Qinghai Lake-Episode 3

Luckily, they have finished the trip around Qinghai Lake after these hardships. And the rainbow always came after the rain.

The trip was not easy at all, but it was worth of it. They have experienced the ups and downs of the roads, western China’s unique climate, herds of sheep and cows in the grassland, charming sunrises and sunsets and other amazing things during this motorcycle trip.

The trip would end but the precious friendship and the valuable memory last forever.

23 Days of Silk Road Motorcycle Trip over 8000km---Episode 2

Cities along the Silk Road are enormous treasure troves of history, culture, architecture and the arts. The scenery and sights along the Silk Road are spectacular and intriguing. There are well-known Mogao Caves (Mogao Grottoes) in Dunhuang, the Mars Camp whose landscape resembles Mars in Lenghu town, Chaka Salt Lake known as "Mirror of the Sky" in Ulan County and more.

23 Days of Silk Road Motorcycle Trip over 8000km---Episode 3

Though they have made researches and prepared well beforehand, during 28 days of motortrip along the Silk Road, they still faced some challenges, such as the changeable weather in western China, sudden animal crossing the road, unexpected failures with the motorcycles, etc. They never gave up or changed their mind, but encouraged and helped each other to finish the whole trip with their beloved motorcycles.

More than 2, 000 years ago in Xihan Dynasty, Zhangqian opened the north-south road to the western region, namely the famous Silk Road with the command of Emperor Han Wudi.

More than 1, 400 years ago in Tan Dynasty, Xuanzang made a historic pilgrimage to India along the Silk Road to obtain Buddhist sutras.

In 2020, Fufeng brothers started their motortrips along the Silk Road with great respect to them, and created their unique and wonderful motortrips.

Let's look forward to the next trip!

Yes, riding in China will be a great and wonderful experience, but it will take more time and effort to prepare than other motortrips.

Actually, every country has its own unique rules and laws for motorcyclists to comply to. So does China.

China is one of the strictest countries for foreign registered motorcycles to start their motorcycle trip. If you plan your motortrip through different provinces, you must get motor travel permits from each of them. Finding a local guide will be great help, and he or she will take care of all documents and driving license so that you could ride legally and freely across China. Lastly, local fixers will help as well when there is something wrong with the motorcycles.

Hope you could experience the true spirit of adventure motorcycling in China.

Beautiful and unique scenery in Dali, Cangshan and Erhai Lake in their motorcycle rides. It was really a wonderful journey with the gentle wind and warm sum on their face.

On the way they also met other cyclists from other places, even if their destination was different, it was an important harvest of the journey.

Yes you can, but you need a Chinese driver's license. No foreign or international license will do. Some tour companies will do all the paperwork for you for a temporary DL, but those tours cost a lot of $$$.
With a tour company, you can use any international CC. Locally, you need WeChat pay or AliPay which are hard to set up for a foreigner.
I have some friends who have ridden here for years w/o the proper endorsements on their DL, and just say "I don't understand" in Chinese when they are stopped for any reason. I wouldn't recommend that to a tourist, though. The Chinese police, if you ever see one, are the nicest people in the world and they are not armed. They are there just to help you. But like anywhere else, don't f with them.....:)

If you have the time and some local help, you can get the DL for almost no money and buy a bike for less than the rental and sell it back when you leave. I know that this is a lot of work, but it'll make your trip cost a fraction of a guided tour.

If any one of you want to start your trip from Chongqing or even Chengdu, I will help you with all these things. (at Chengdu, I would need to be reimbursed for the train ticket. Chongqing is better, because my wife (who is too powerful for me) can make "things happen"

Next few days, they continued their journey to snowy plateau, going north along the Nu River.

The Nu river, flowing from the Tibetan plateau, was turbulent.
They rode our motorcycle, along with the sound of the river, all the way forward.

The stretch of mountains and winding roads seemed endless, giving their wonderful cycling riding experience.

Amazing riding and scenery. Congratulations on having a competent, like minded group to make your rides with.

I have long considered riding some long distance rides in China, but my geographical savvy in central and western China is pretty limited.

This type of trip is on my bucket list...

China, like so many other places, can be magical and really only properly appreciated on a motorcycle. In a car, people usually are glued to their phones and the road and scenery go unappreciated.
If anyone wants to go and ride in China about a year from now, let me know. Maybe we can do a group tour.
