Watched the first(free) episode on Apple TV ..looked like a logistical nightmare bringing all this together..
One episode in and I'm actually liking it more than I expected to. Really similar feel to Long Way Round and much better than Long Way Down so far, but I found LWD disappointing compared to LWR. Definitely worth a watch!
Show took a while to get going, but 1/3 way into episode 2 they finally hit the road and....good lord what a beautiful (and cold!) way to start things off. South America
Just watched the first episode.. Wow the amount of planning, logistics, and money involved is amazing. Looks like we are in for a good show!
Are any of you's hitting the channel via the internet, or are you all running apple devices? I'm on a PC desktop and Android based phone.
I I'm watching on a TV using a Roku device to access the Apple+ app. So yes, technically I am watching via the internet.
Watched the first episode, really enjoyed it. Holy cow, so may obstacles to overcome on a short time frame. Kudos to them for putting this together and pulling it off. Watched it on my ipad. When I went to watch episode 2, it demanded my cc info. Don't really want to go through all that only to have to cancel later, so will give it another go today and see if I can watch ep 2 & 3 without using my cc.
Watched episode three last night with my girlfriend who is enjoying it as well. As much as I enjoy the new technology it just isn't here yet, at least with the bikes they are using. The cold, the range and the charging recovery has only convinced me to stick with the bikes that I have. I really hope the technology continues to improve. So far I'm more impressed with the pickups they are using than the bikes.
I've been watching it and can't see the advantage to an electric motorcycle. They don't charge if it is to cold. I would have thought Harley would have incorporated some form of battery warmer in the charging system to prevent that. Meanwhile I'm also watching Ed March ride his CT90 through a blizzard and getting approximately the same mileage. I watched a YT video of Jay Leno's 1909 Baker electric car. It had a range of 100 miles a century ago. The technology should be farther along by now.
Certainly automobile battery technology is further along now. There's a current Tesla model variant that has an EPA estimated range of 402 miles. Of course size/weight is a bigger challenge for a bike. And I suspect qn extreme temperature also affects the Tesla. 402 isn't really 402. But I do get your point that it feels things should be further along. It almost seems like HD used Long Way Up as a joint marketing endeavor and long-term R&D session. Whatever the case, it's all just a matter of time...
Been watching and enjoying it, 3 episodes in now. I think these episodes will give ammunition to both e-vehicle skeptics and proponents, people will come away having their biases confirmed on both sides. Spoiler alert!: I couldn't believe, I think it was the 2nd episode, that there was some last minute charger modifications and testing being done by Harley the night before they headed out that they apparently did not tell McGregor and Borman about previously. They got it resolved, but holy sh-t I would have t-ed off on them. And their general naivete about e-motos in general, blowing my mind. Its like they put about this much thought (hold fingers 1 mm apart) about e-motos before heading out. On the other hand, they made the trip, they seemed to handle everything in stride, and looked like they had an amazing time. I'm impressed. And a little jealous. I'd like to go on an epic moto trip with my best friend too, Lol. And those Rivians, they look killer. I want one. Bad.
I really enjoyed episode 4 and then I watched the first couple episodes of Long Way Round. So glad these two had the courage then and again just recently to not only make the journey, but on prototype electric vehicles at that. A reminder that KTM done goofed big time and wonder if Zero passed up the chance like KTM did as their DSR seemed like it could’ve been a great option. (Interestingly, KTM backing out may have driven these guys even more to show it could be done on the BMW’s in LWR). I know one thing, there was no way they were going to consider the KTM Freeride, or any KTM as far as Charley was concerned no matter how good, plus KTM’s only EM doesn’t have anywhere as large a battery as either the Zero’s or the LiveWire. Speaking of battery sizes, trip surely would’ve been much easier if that had rode up on 21.5 Enérgica’s with twice the urban range of both HD and Zero, and with more charging options, but these released after filming had started, though, if the boys made it up on prototype HD and Rivian’s.. (insert what if scenario here) Honestly though, it’s a joy watching these two and the crew travel through the beautiful countryside and the views were spectacular and the people they’ve met are perhaps the best part of it all. It’s a treat to travel vicariously with Ewan and Charley and a fitting end to a great trilogy of two wheeled travel, no matter what they rode or what powered them.
I have watched both LWR and LWD... and I just watched the third one of LWU... I admire the work they put into getting this ready to happen, and the adventure they are putting on... but the incessant whining about how cold it is, is silly.. don't forget, they get off the bikes every hour or so to charge them... so every time they do, there is an opportunity to warm up... I have travelled much longer, in temperatures just as cold and colder, and did not get cold feet, or hands... and besides, if you are cold in 0 Centigrade temperature, your wearing the wrong gear... but It did make me think about a cross Canada run on a Livewire... I did the logistics of it, checking charging stations and time to charge, and I think the 7,500 kilometres in 3 weeks is very doable... In 2 weeks would be the challenge... Harley Davidson, you can PM me if you are into it, I understand that the Harley Dealer in Victoria has quite a few 2020's that they did not sell... all I need is one of them... LOL.
Oh, pick me! Pick me! I'll go with you. If I can sneak across the border and not get stopped by the authorities along the way, it will be the greatest adventure ever. I'll wear my Canada t-shirt every day and only drink O'Keefe's. I'll fit right in. We can ride to my mom's cabin on Cape Breton Island, coast to coast, dip our wheels in the Atlantic, I know the perfect spot in Mabou. Or right from my mom's property. And I understand the concept of cold and how to check temperatures ahead of time and everything. Let me know when we leave. I suggest late next spring when its warmer and we can get across those freaking Canadian Rockies. Lol
Right on Red. We’ll bring our Altas with us and sample Canada’s best off road riding along the way. Its all coming together, Lol.
If we could get the same bikes, it would be nice to go off road a bit... I am very impressed with how well the bikes are doing in the gravel, sand, dirt roads of Bolivia... never mind the Sportster camera bike... These are NOT stock bikes... lol... what is funny is that Ewen has the same Harley rain Gear I have... it is excellent stuff... but where the hell is his Klim suit??... I have one, an Adventure one, and that is what I would be wearing.... also, his tent is exactly the same one I have... If the damn bikes where not so expensive, I would just buy one and go... and right now would be a great time, October across Canada is a great month to travel... I live in the Southern BC Rocky Mountains and had a great ride today. This is Bull Mountain, the southern mountain in the Steeples Range, in the Southern Canadian Rocky Mountains, just a bit East of Cranbrook... taken Today.
Just a couple weeks ago, Tesla announced their plaid version of the Model S with 520+ mile range. Battery tech has had more improvements in the last 8 years than the hundred before it. It just took the desire and effort, backed by lots of engineering in recent years to get us where we are today. With regards to LWU, I’m looking forward to watching the next episode tomorrow, however, this past week while waiting for the next bit to air, I binge watched Long Way Round, and their journey was nothing short of spectacular. It really is a must watch for those who haven’t seen it and speaks volumes to the adventurers in all of us.
what is funny is that in long way round, they would have rode right past my hometown… And I recognize the hills on the side of the road just before they get to the Montana border… That is my go-to border crossing when I cross into the US
