1000 miles in 24 hours Off-road

It has turned cold now so I wont be doing the ride for a few months, Ill read through the IBA stuff and see what's required, not a big deal to me if IBA is involved or not, Ill have plenty of witness and tracking of the ride along with a inreach link so people can follow along if they want. Either way I will document it and have proof of the ride. With todays technology its pretty easy to document the route without IBA.

Ah, so this is a marketing exercise for your bikes, got it.

Not sure yet we are working on a rally 450 and may ride that bike if its ready otherwise Ill be on a ktm 790r.

By my count, 52 unique names are on that list (Dusty Butt) currently - worldwide.

Besides, with a few months of winter setting in, nothing like having the time - in advance of the ride NOW - to have IBA Central give the route a thumbs up.

Pretty cool concept man. Screw the naysayers and questioners and go for it. Who cares if some organization approves it or not, just ride. You've obviously put some thought into doing this and done some planning. Best of luck, and when the time comes to do it ride safe.

Used to be you said you did something, someone else challenged it, and you had a buddy who said "I was there, man, and he did it."

Now it's all about organizations and certifications and whatnot. None of which I care about. And if some org doesn’t cert it the internet won’t believe it...from their couches.


I may be interested in at least riding portions. I'm on the Western Slope of CO. At the very least I could provide some SAG support.

Yeah definitely running auxiliary lights, also planning it for a full moon evening.

Bring something to clean visor and light optics to deal with bugs.

I've been toying with the idea of doing one in central and eastern Montana. If I do it, it will be as close to the summer solstice as possible for maximum daylight hours. That far north, it will be light from around 0500 to 2200. Obviously, a desert one would need to be a different season for heat avoidance. I'd be looking for some heat. Big advantage of the desert is no large, wild ungulates. Passing through any open cattle range? I say go for it. If getting an IBA certification floats your boat, get it. Sounds like you might be repeating a loop which may require pre-approval. If you don't care about the IBA, go for it anyway. I'll read your ride report

Ive wanted to do this style of trip on a bdr or two. But I haven't mentioned it because so many people feel differently and just want to smell the roses. Different strokes for different folks. If I was closer I would join.
Install all the lights. Plan the easiest section for dark. Have fun.

My motivation

Last winter I had a accident (not bike related unfortunately) that required a full elbow reconstruction, after the surgery I made the mistake of reading all the horror story’s on the internet of others who had similar situation. Some never regained strength or use, I was pretty depressed and concerned if I would be able to ride and enjoy what I love again.
Thankfully I’m all healed up now and have about 80% strength and movement back in my left elbow. I’ll never take for granted the ability to ride or do what I love again. Enjoy what you have, I know I’ll be loven every mile of the 1000/24 no matter how grueling it is! Back in the saddle again!!

I will definitely be following. Made my Dusty Butt attemp in 2019. Got as far as 925 miles before the second time off the bike I could not get it out of a mud filled ditch at midnight in Nebraska. Had 4 hours left on the clock when the surface changed from hardback to mud. I was riding next to a corn field and the large sprinkler cannon had soaked the dirt rode. Took me 2 hours to get unstuck thanks to a big corn fed State Trooper. County Sheriff had stopped but said he wasn't allowed to help. Lessons learned...daylight is key. I averaged around 60mph during daylight and was expecting to hold 40mph at night...nope, I have 2 sets of extra auxiliary lights plus the led headlight on the BMW GSA and had to stay at 30mph because surfaces changes to quickly. I came off the bike twice, both in the dark. I had approximately 10 deer near misses. Took out a number of birds, at least 1 rabbit and a rattlesnake. I rode solo and plan to do so again this year to take care of unfinished business. However, I will have someone waiting at the final 2 night stages to ride behind me for a bit of safety cushion. I did one big loop starting in Kansas, looping around through Colorado and Nebraska; before ending at the start. If you are riding a series of the same loop, it should be easier as you will be familiar with the terrain on your 2nd and 3rd loop. Good luck to you.

Sweet challenge. Ever raced 24 hrs Glen Helen? It is an organized race that anyone can be part of, quite the challenge. Top guys do like 700+ miles around brutal GP track. Baja 1000 under 24 hrs to La Paz.

What are you riding. For sure a job for a 05-12 450x .
