Oxley speed limit update + info on the save Oxley ride

It was a huge turnout for such a hot windy day, all sorts of riders and bikes. Estimates of 400 from Wauchope were led up the mountain by John, the local copper. At Gingers Creek the joint was packed, band played, coffee and sausage sandwich lines, petitions, and fiery speeches, stakeholders from Walcha and Wauchope emphasised how important the riders that the Oxley attracts are to the local economies, and lots of talk about the importance of not spoiling the magic of this world famous road with the proposed new speed limits, not that they're going to slow most bikers, it just increases the chance of getting booked.
As the afternoon got hotter and the wind picked up we headed back down. Lots of sticks and broken branches on the road, saw two offs on the way down, reminded me that the Oxley has to be respected and handled carefully. Its still one of the best motorcycle roads in the state.

Just like to point out that the Rally was a huge success with no incidents. We got the message to the RMS. The off's happened after the Rally, which had nothing to do with the Rally as the Rally was from Wauchope and Walcha to Gingers Creek.

It doesn't matter if the offs were part of the rally or not, it does a lot of damage to the cause. Pity.

With all the rain recently I have done some road loops which have included the Oxley Highway. The first few times I saw nothing of note but yesterday at the base of the mountain there was a gravel patch on the North side with 4 to 5 cars with bike trailers attached. All the bikes had left bar one, super sports looking thing with all the bling. Halfway up the first section where it is all bitupave the sports bloke goes past at utter warp speed. I get to the end of that section where the national park starts and the road is less perfect and he is doing a u-turn to do it all again. when I say warp speed I was doing close to 1000 and had started braking for the next 25km/hr corner and he went past like I was a sign post and only just made the corner. Luckily there was nothing coming the other way or he was a pancake.

We really are our own worst enemy sometimes and need to learn to help ourselves. As always it is the 1% of morons who ruin it for everyone else, if you want to trailer your rocket ship to somewhere where you can wring its neck, try Eastern Creek or one of the many other closed track venues. When we allow these dickheads to use public roads as personal race tracks the general public will unfortunately see all motorbike riders as a problem and annoy the authorities until they impose draconian speed limits and heavy policing that ruin it for everyone. The same goes for dirt roads through farming properties, if enough twits go all Toby Price through these areas expect restrictions and policing there too. If you don't want to lose what little freedoms we have left, either dob these dickheads in or at least stop them and give them a warning if they keep doing it you will.

Yes, fat old fingers and keyboards not a good mix. And yes, I went over the speed limit on numerous occasions but there is a big difference between going fast and going stupid. Anyway, whilever we have people treating the roads like racetracks the heavier restrictions and policing will just get worse.

Many sports bike riders trailer their bikes to ride the Oxley because they come from far and wide, when you get 2-3k km from $ 600 tyres and they aren't the most comfortable bikes why would you ride hundreds of kms.
Same reason the bush bashers do the same. Incidentally the speed limit in the forestry is 40 but does anyone do that? of course not. I know the blokes your referring to and they are very good and responsible riders, perhaps if you'd been checking your mirrors you wouldn't have been so startled

No such thing as responsible speeding.
You can convince yourself you're speeding safely but it is an illusion.
I have had two major offs in 40 years of riding high performance road bikes and not because my ambition outweighed my talent.
Both times it was from circumstances beyond my control but if I'm 100% honest, had I been traveling at the speed limit, chances are I wouldn't have crashed.
If you ride like there's nothing coming the other way (possibly on the wrong side of the road) in the belief there is nothing but clean grippy bitumen, you're riding beyond an acceptable risk which is what we do every time we throw a leg over to go for a ride.
I don't necessarily agree with the speed limit being dropped on some of our twistyer roads but the seed limit is for the lowest common dominator.
This is the world we live in because too many riders/drivers thought they were responsible, that they knew better and didn't need to adhere to the speed limit, yet they still crashed.
End of the day, if you want to get anywhere near your crotch rockets potential, take it to the track, otherwise buy an adventure bike and speed down forestry roads.

Sounds like you've been brainwashed, and for your info I've got a sports bike, 2 adventure bikes 1 registered dirt bike and 2 classic bikes which all get ridden regularly so I get to do a wide variety of riding. To be honest I feel safer on the roads than in the forestry where you have incompetent and inexperienced riders many unlicenced and unregistered coming towards you at 100+ around blind corners , speaking from experience here where I was once involved in a head on in just that circumstance and have seen fatalities that happened in the same way.

I wasn't startled, I was expecting him but ma and pa on the Sunday drive over the mountain would have been startled. This bloke may have been very good but far from responsible. Any wanker can do 200 in a straight line but do you need to hit that between corners 3/4/500 metres apart? In my sports bike days I have had many tools rocket past on a straight only to be so fucked up in the corner I am braking to not run into them mid corner. Helped pick up many and clean up their wreckage when halfway around the corner is a greasy wet patch or they just don't have the skills/experience. There is a time and place for everything but next time I see this thread full of people complaining about more restrictions I will certainly say I told you so and they deserve it.
