I really screwed the pooch on the ol’ GS: two broken footpeg mounts. I know, I know... TT hard parts! Too late for that now! I’ve been contacting local welding shops to get it repaired. How worried should I be about frying the ECU and other electrical components? Anything I should disconnect or remove prior to welding? Thanks
Definitely disconnect the battery cables. I'd at least remove the battery altogether. Some will say going as far as unclipping the wiring harness from the ECU is unnecessary. As easy as it is to do, however, I would. I haven't owned an 1100 model bike, but I gotta ask... Would it make sense to just buy another transmission? And for what it's worth, Heed now seems to offer their ver. of the hard parts... https://heedshop.eu/en_US/p/Transmi...-1100-GS-R-850-GS-R-1100-R-R-850-R-silver/498
Appreciate your advice @lewisjr1 I’ll start looking for a used transmission as a final option. I was hoping not to source a used transmission, split the bike, rehab the used transmission, etc... If the welding doesn’t work, I may end up looking for another R1100GS and keep this one for parts.
Anton came through with a transmission case for me. I had it installed and out hard parts both of my 1100’s. http://largiader.com/ Hard parts came from Poland. Took a few weeks to get.
I’ve been down that road. I consulted with a few welding pros, and none would even touch it. That metal is very porous, for one thing, and very hard to clean it up enough to weld effectively. I wound up replacing the trans. +1 on the recommendation to call Anton.
I’ve got a guy who’s willing to try it, I figure I have nothing to lose at this point. He gave me the “red light guarantee”: the welds will hold long enough to leave his driveway, once he can’t see the tail light, it’s out of his hands I figure I’ll try the easiest thing first then weigh my options. I need a trans output shaft seal at this point so the trans may come out over the winter if it lasts that long.
Unplug ECU!!!!!!! I am too lazy to take a pic of the decals on my welding helmet, the race teams that I worked for made them for a reason..... If your TIG guy cleans it up real good & pre heats it you will prob be fine, just change oil afterwards... I bought my hard parts fm ADVmotorad a few years ago, he may do ADVrider discount Keep us posted Good luck!!!!
@slacker1965 School me on the reason for the oil change? The heat associated with the welding? Trans or engine oil too? Thanks
I wouldn't worry about the trans oil, it is far from there. I would weld, then pull the swingarm bearings and check for damage.
See Jims post, he knows way more than me..... I was kinds of thinking of any bits that may have gotten real hot & def if anything blows thru.....
