Palouse Riders

I'm usually more concerned with the roads out of Colfax.

Well, they haven't closed the gates, yet.

No one wants to play my game. Ho Hum. I've taken 8-9 different roads out of Colfax, but there are a couple more.

I have been through Colfax very quickly, does that count?
I used to hang out on Union Flat Creek Road and Ewartsville road with lots of fun in Steptoe Canyon.

I am partial to Riding up Wawawai canyon, down Penawawa creek and over to Hay, Wa.

If I am going to the hospital area I usually take Prune Orchard Road to Almota Rd to town.

I like the scenery on the South Palouse River road the best.
Just about got to eat a 6x6 elk in the fog on the south end of town.
Parvin Rd from Albion going by the Shawnee substation.

Klemgard Park and the roads there are nice and give access to Almota or the other Canyons.

Au contraire mon frer: Green Hollow Road heading N.!

Also: Schmuck Park's swish public bathrooms, an aging prostrate's best friend.

Meanwhile, y'day outside Kendrick, heading back down from Gold Hill Church....

I will be checking out some of these other interesting roads around Colfax next time I'm down there. Thanks guys.

I rode an ATV down Eagle Creek to the Salmon River today. There is a fair amount of snow and ice on top. It will be a week or two before a motorcycle can get down Eagle Creek.

Thanks fellas' for posting all these tips! I should be able to manage a full overdose of Palouse riding with all the routes gleaned from this thread. dd

Oops, sorry! ...missed this somehow. So....

1) Almota Rd., yeah, nice loop for me from Albion (and nice N. gravel access to Albion from Albion-Parvin Rd. along the river), over to Klemgaard (super nice right now but hella dusty soon) or down to Almota and the long loop over to Colfax (sorta boring in the middle there).

Grease up at Zips, regret a chocolate shake and then...

2) Head N. outta Colfax on that Green Hollow Rd. I mentioned above, (which really is a lil sweety) up to 23 and over either to St. John to the W. or Steptoe and Steptoe Butte/Oakesdale via (favorite philospher) Hume Rd.

3) But for gravel grinding I love to come in/out of Colfax on N. Palouse River Rd. (had a serious fixation with seeing and riding as much of the Palouse River as I could when I first got the CRF two years ago!) OR South Fork Palouse River Rd. (or both as a loop with Elberton in the middle, really, is ideal).

4) I cannot, will not, utterly refuse...to ride into or out of Colfax on either 195 or 26 having driven both a bazillion times over the last 30 years! ...unless I'm coming down from the St. John area and hop on 26 at the fairgrounds. :)

Oh, oops, and also Bob Schulz road, where I found this cool cemetery. Road is supposed to loop around from here but a farmer has quietly sealed it off.

There is a very, very nice gated-off hike/walk along the river here, as well, that starts at the gravel pit on the edge of town, basically working its way just below Bob Schulz road. It's a long drive for any of us to take a walk, but worth it once a year or so.

One of my favorite loop rides will again be available this summer. The Falls Road from Elk City to Selway Falls on the Selway River has been closed the past four years do to several slides. A buddy and myself traveled about 6 miles up the now 50" wide trail with our ATVs this week until the snow was too deep to bust through. An experienced rider on a motorcycle shouldn't have any problems with the new trail. The loop starts at the town of Clearwater Idaho and includes the historic Elk City Wagon Road to Elk City. Then a steep but scenic ride down the Falls Road (trail) to the Selway River. Follow the Selway to the Lochsa River and your home free.

Had to go into Clarkston to get some bits for the beast from Mac's today (nice ta meetcha, @DoubleThumper, btw). Such a pretty day had to take the long way around.

Fyi for folks in my neck of the Palouse. Friends of mine are taking over the Weinhard Cafe in Dayton, so the dining experience will be expanding.

Yes, great to meet you too, look forward to riding with you! As you rode away I remembered the name of the place our group stopped at - "Whiskey Canyon". I'll try the place you recommended next time !

Are they going to do breakfast? Previous owner's breakfasts were amazing... until they stopped doing breakfast.

I forgot to mention that on this route you can ride to seven fire lookouts. Corral Hill, Lookout Butte, Pilot Knob, Elk Summit, Anderson Butte, Indian Hill, and Coolwater Lookouts. Three or four of those are usually manned during the summer. I wouldn't recommend riding a large adventure bike to Pilot Knob and Coolwater Lookouts. It's challenging on a small dirt bike. It's about a one mile hike to both of those lookouts if you want to check them out on foot.

Blissed out Friday eve on Cherry Lane bridge --> Gifford Ruebens Rd --> Cottonwood Creek Rd...and then on a whim, instead of heading on to Culdesac, I took a right instead of left --> Garden Gulch Rd. Oh man, what a sweet hidden gem of winding pavement! Probably fun to zip up and down but the evening was so...hell, I'm going to say it: lovely, there, I said it...with everything in bloom that I just tooled along at 40 breathing in the blossoms.
