A couple of days ago there was a discussion about higher idle RPMs after a Power Commander was installed and whether the PC was adding more fuel at idle, causing a higher RPM. I had an interesting look at that today.

When I installed my PowerTronic my Hima was pretty much stock except for an NGK iridium spark plug. When I rode it, I found the throttle response from idle was a bit abrupt, so I cut the PT low RPM fueling boost from 7% to 4%. My idle was at 1250 before and after I changed the low RPM enrichment.

Since then, I installed the Delkevic exhaust and remove the air injection system. When I removed the air inject my idle went from floating around 1250 to a steady 1100 RPM. I was fine with that and did not adjust the idle air screw.

Today, I pulled my Uni air filter off the shelf and oiled it up and installed it in place of the OEM air filter, and went for a ride. My warm idle went up to about 1175 and was floating a bit. So when I got home, I bumped my low RPM fueling enrichment back up to 7% (from 4%) and went for another ride. Idle is back down at about 1100 RPM or just over. Basically subtle changes.

But the interesting point is that increasing airflow seems to equal higher idle RPM, while increasing fuel enrichment at idle, seems to lower idle RPM. At least, that is my experience.

Well. That was weird. I just opened the gas tank cap and I had a huge puff of air hit me in the face - I figured that was normal though. I ran it clocked at 2k RPM for a few minutes and now it runs normally. Rode it around the block a few times. Cold start just fine an hour later. No complaints, I guess.

Wow those bearings were a disaster!

If all you broke on the connector was the lock tab, I wouldn’t worry about it. Very unlikely it’ll fall off, and if it does you know the first thing to check!

The tailwind never really delivered on its promises. By the time I was heading north, the wind was as much from the west as the south. Still, better than a headwind or 10 o’clock wind. And the roads got better.



Not much unpaved today, but this road was pretty nice.

Stopped in Winslow, IL, which wants you to know they have an artesian well.

The well’s in “Paradise Cove,” a little park with a gazebo and a waterfall that’s been turned back on for summer.



People come by this little park to fill up jugs of the cold, clean water. Unlike many similar artesian spouts along the IL-WI line, the one in Winslow is actually tested weekly for purity because it’s also the town water supply. Many of the other “medicinal” wells in the area sport signs warning of the water’s dubious provenance, but Winslow’s is tested safe. Someday I’m going to pick up ten gallons of the stuff and brew beer with it.

Today, I just filled my bottle, drank it, repeated twice and got on my way. Bought gas. Wind pushed the MPG all the way down to 55.

This is the Cheese Country Trail, an abandoned railroad bed that runs from Monroe to Mineral Point. You can ride it... if you buy an expensive permit (doubly expensive if you’re from out of state) and stick to the strictly enforced 15 mph speed limit. Bo thanks.

First check would be for loose / poor battery, earth, relay, solenoid, starter connections.
The fact that you can replicate the symptom by moving either the relay or solenoid might be a clue.
Both the relay and the solenoid should give a distinct click when you press the starter button.
f there is a separate relay that is, so have a good look at the wiring diagram!
Then it is just a check of every switch in the circuit , and as the starter relay sometimes earths through the neutral ,side stand, clutch interlock system something like a poor neutral switch can give the same symptoms DAKIK!

Thanks, I thought it seemed smaller than 4mm. All screws I've seen around here are Phillips head so I'll probably blow 3 bucks on a tappet adjust tool. Feel much more comfortable ordering one now I know the correct size.

Anyone know of a gps/sat nav app for android phone that will trace the route ridden then allow to backtrack the same route to get unlost again? Afaik google doesn't.
Goggle also has lots of roads or tracks that don't actually exist or peter out before getting to where they "should."
Also goggle seems to only want me to go their way from here to there even though I know there are different routes and I'd rather go this way or probably that way...

You could try Locus Maps. You can record your track and I would suspect that you'd just save it and then load it again to backtrack your route.

At the moment I have a carb Himma. After buying I changed the filter and plug to an Iridium. Had pilot jet and main jet changed. As an experiment I just changed back to standard air filter but have left the jets changed. Bike now starts better, needs less choke before riding. After pulling out the choke and a about 12 seconds push it in and the bike idles better. Once I have been for a ride idle is about 400 RPM higher than the after market filter. Now thinking I was getting to much air for the volume of fuel?? Am I wrong or right?? Bike running really well.

Perhaps you can use that filter when you install the 477 and need the extra air. But it would indicate lean running as you expected.

At last getting sorted, ex demo 1500km FI 2021 model. Powertronic this week. Will dyno results as standard bike. 2 Then with air cleaner and 477 kit and full delvic exhaust. Have just ordered sprockets and some other bits from Hitchcocks. Let the fun begin.

Adding to the discussion. Anyone with a Euro 5/6 Himalayan and running a full system like Delkevic? Basically, trying to know if it impacts negatively when changing from the Euro 5/6 exhaust which has an added catalytic converter near the header to the Euro 4 header pipe or a straight pipe like Delkevic.

I dont have a late model but can tell you the delkavic has a larger ID so that will flow better, whether that works for you or not is a different story, would help if you can tune with either Powertronic or Power Commander to take advantage of it.

I am trying to read up on ECU tuning, so that I get some courage to play around. No Dyno's in the radius of 1800kms from my place

If there are any suggestions or reading material that is advisable, please let me know.

Powertronics will supply a map for "free flowing Exhaust".
Dont be afraid to adjust the map, make your changes on the map not connected to the bike and you can save it .
Burn it to the ECU and see what your changes do to the running and change back if you want.

Cant suggest any reading material but the map on Sams site would be a good starting point, use map 2 it has a bit extra fuel and a lot of ignition advance, perhaps reduce the advance to a maximum of 3 to reduce the chance of knocking, what is your fuel like ?, that map was designed for 98 ron.
