I have Garmin InReach Explorer+ with "safety" plan (the cheapest one). It unclear to me how they are charging in tracking mode: 10c per send or per record. For example, using settings as shown in the attached photo, if I run it for 1 hour will I pay 20c or $6?

$0.20/hr. If someone requests a location ping through the Mapshare website, you'll get dinged another $0.10/ping.
Log is local to the device. The log points can get uploaded to the Mapshare website when you sync, but not sent via the satellite.

This is fantastic! Let me double-check if my understanding is correct: Under these settings, somebody tracking my progress via the MapShare website will be able to see my coarse position updates in 30 min intervals. However, once I am back to civilization and sync with my mobile phone the additional waypoints will appear?

Correct. Someone watching Mapshare (or tracking via Spotwalla) will see your position updated twice and hour. The plot displayed on your inReach (or on your linked phone with Earthmate) will update every minute.

The deal about uploading during syncs seems to have mixed results. Some claim it works for them every time. Some say it never works for them (only sent points show). Some get in-between results.
There has been at least on thread trying to identify the settings involved or the exact process to make it work every time.

Just noticed you're another Bay Area inmate. Which side of the Bay?

Thanks for info, as I just acquired an inReach SE with the basic plan as well. I'm still not entirely clear on the Mapsource interface. Here's what I would like to happen:

    1. Send a "custom pre-recorded" text message to my wife's cell phone. If I'm understanding correctly, this text will have a web link to the Mapsource map, correct?
    2. The text would say something like "All is great - stopped for the day". She could then tap the link and see where I am at on the map.

She doesn't need to see any waypoint or tracks, or reply to my text, just see where I stopped moving. Will this capability cost more money?

Slight correction. The inReach devices link to Mapshare.

Your text message will provide your current coordinates (Lat/Lon). Your wife can log onto MapShare anytime and see graphically where your last 30 minute "send" originated.

Test message went to wife's email and she was able to see where I sent it from, that part worked great. What didn't work, was that she did not receive a text on her phone. Been doing some research, but so far have not figured out what is wrong.

Login to inreach.garmin.com and make sure she is listed under contacts with her cell phone number. For the 3 Preset messages, you have to enter her mobile number as the recipient for each. Then sync your device.
If you were using the Earthmate app, when you type in her contact name you should get one entry for each contact type: mobile, email, etc. Make sure you selected the correct one. You may get multiples because it will be reading both the Contacts downloaded to the inReach as well as your phone's Contacts list.

Ah.... this was the issue, as it defaults to email addresses as the recipient when you add a contact. I assumed since it saw the correct "contact" that it would send to the contact phone number, not the contact's email. So I started to type her actual phone number and it picked it up. It now works like I was hoping it would. Thanks for the help!
