Thanks, but I was asking about tire mileage on stock Z8's. Have 3500 miles now and am planning on attending the RA Game of Roads and will be putting on another 1500-2000 miles. If I am going to have to replace during rally, I want to plan for it. As for MPG, no offense, but who cares!! I don't ride for economy. Rick G
Put new EBC pads on the front today. Figured it would be a fast job. Nope one inboard and one outboard pad were a very tight fit. Their mates were loose. Calipers were fine. cleaned and pistons pushed in by hand fine. All the way in. So, loosened and reset the wheel and axel to torque specs . Assembly must be a tad off center to the left. I can shim it to center next time. Today was very careful filing of two pads to get clearance . Functionally fine, but annoys me.
Just wanted to check in. It has been months since I have ridden my RT. It is currently sitting at the dealer with no anticipated return date. It has been sitting their for 4 weeks. They can not get the part in from BMW. The dealer had a 10 week wait for service when I called 14 weeks ago. When I dropped the bike off in early June they were scheduling mid September at that time. The are fully staffed but say all the recalls in the last two years have swamped them. Lucky I have two motorcycles. I did trade in my big touring Yamaha on a fun little Moto Guzzi V85tt so I am enjoying that bike. I don't think I will see the BMW this summer
I had a similar problem when a tie down strap got wrapped up in my rear axle and damaged the axle seal back in June. It is an inexpensive part but not readily available. The shop is predicting October or November. I sourced a used final drive and just handed them the damaged one so I could keep riding.
The part is the fuel pump. It has a recall so BMW will cover the cost. The deAler i am using is the best one around in a 300 mile radius. I am fortunate to have another motorcycle to ride
I did a thing, swapped my '11 CamHead for an '18 WetHead. I hope I like the new girl as much as I as I did the old one.... .
Congrats is in order... Camheads are good but LCs are way better... You may want to go through recent thread from Ranger Ricky (linky below) as to what are essential add-ons for your new steed. I'm sure you've got left plenty of pesos for necessary doohickeys - no one rides the bikes stock as bought any more... School me on BMW R1200/50 RT Wethead | Adventure Rider (advrider.com)
I can barely lift my '11 camhead onto center stand. On paper the LC's are ~44 lbs heavier. Someone said the LC weight includes side cases where the camhead weight (from BMW) did not, maybe that's half the 44 lbs. Curious if you notice any difference, center standing your new LC...
You should be able to get Camhead easier on the CS than LC as the CS placement was closer to the right front/rear balance point - or so it is my experience, ymmv... LCs did gain weight due to extra rads/airbox/ducts so it'll be more than just cases that have contributed to the higher weight. Good news is that the LC's weight disappears as you get rolling and there's much more oomph out of LC engine to help with added weight. LC feels amazingly agile and can be hassled pretty darn good in the hands of competent riders...
Use of a center stand shouldn't involve lifting any meaningful amount, however BMW is worse than most when it comes to designing center stands and has been for decades. The technique is using the muscles in your leg to push down on the lever arm on the center stand. I'm a light weight at 150 lbs and pop my Goldwing up on the stand with less effort than my Hexhead.
Anyone using the Helite Airbag Vest/Jacket with the tether on a LC R12RT? If so, can you tell me where you secure the loop end of the tether under the seat?
I have a 2015 RT and was amazed at how easy it went up on the center stand, I can even do it barefoot. My comparison is a KTM SMT that is about 150 pounds lighter.
Here's what I did on my 2015 RT. Hope the photo makes it clear. Then I routed the tether under the left-side rubber seat support and brought it up at the center of the seat. View attachment 3089596
Same. My 2016 RT is waaaaaay easier than my 71 R75/5. No comparison. Here's my bike btw. Just got it last week. I really like it. It's next to one of the bikes I traded in. The other was a Street Glide. I'm thinning the herd and the RT is a great "best of both worlds" choice - speed and comfort.
