I finally got it! I have the 2021 LR.

Congrats! In the us, they only offer the 2020 model and stopped making them. What country are you in where they offer a 21? Finland?

It's really low-rate production. The 3rd I know of. The 2020 LR kit fits to the 2021 bike with a small modification to the seat pan.

The first questions as a LR rider:

1. Where you keep your tools? Apparently the LR has no tool box.

2. Has anyone rekeyed the fuel cap lock? Can it be done?

3. Which tank you should run dry first?

4. What is the best way to make it less yellow? Is a custom sticker set the only option?

I've got the rade toolbox/airbox for tools

I usually leave 1g in the front tank as my reserve and only fill it on long rides and that is when I'll drain the front tank first

Ymmv

1 - separate tool bag. Have a small waterproof bag on the rear rack for daily/local riding, they go to the bottom of my right pannier bag when traveling.

3 - I'll run the rear out first when on paved road, front when off-road or trails. Haven't found the weight difference to be too detrimental yet.

4 - Plastic paint! I did a few coats on the yellow front tank panels. Really helped it blend in with the radiator area well.

3. I run dry the front first but have run the rear first too just to compare and I don’t find any difference

Got back a few days ago from about 2k miles of the TAT and some of the UT BDR. Had a stupid off on the lockhart basin trail that ended up with an ankle sprain when a foot got caught up in one of the bags. Painful ride back to Moab. Not standing when on the dirt suuuuuucks.

Trip notes -

The Good -

Stock seat is comfy, but invest in padded shorts (like cycling shorts) for longer stretches. My taint still hurts, but I have zero lower back pain. Can't say that for the R1200 on long stretches.

The vibrations of the single are still present at higher speeds. My hands are still a little numb. I was running a rox riser with the additional damper, took it off due to interference with the front adjusters.

Running a D606 on the front results in a nice wobble at 75+, road surface had a noticeable impact. It's calmed a little with the wear and is a fantastic tire otherwise!

Running the Tusk Dsport on the rear. Tire went on easy, balanced well and most of those 2k miles were loaded with me and 65ish lbs of gear. Near 50/50 conditions and adjusted pressure for extended road stretches, this tire is holding up great and aggressive. It's probably 50% worn now. While I had reservations and low expectations for the price point, I'll be a repeat customer when it reaches EOL.

No crash bars, but no problems with front tank, plastics or radiator on this ride.

I dislike night riding and fear the deer/elk/moose/pronghorn/cows/sheep way more than people or curvy roads. Rade Garage LED headlights are pretty damn good however and made it tolerable.


The "bad" -

Had a tip over on a dry, large rock somewhere on BLM land in CO. Turn off traction control, keep your momentum up and don't totally trust the quickshift. False neutrals got annoying (even with a firm up/down attempt).

Had a tip over on wet rocks going down Mineral Creek ("backside" of Engineer Pass in CO). Handlebars are now no longer straight, but front tracks ok. Need to fix.

Had a dumb, low speed trip ending tip over on Lockhart basin trail trying to go through a washout. It was an awkward entry and exit I should've walked the bike through. If you're not sure, walk the fucker over the obstacle. Ditch your luggage for a tail bag only if at all possible for more involved riding.

Neutral indication light no longer works.

Turn signals no longer work.

Rear tank fuel sensor comes on at about 60 miles, then goes away and returns when it's actually low.

Pack less than you think you need. Especially food, but do not skimp on water. Usually only ate one "full" meal per day and supplemented with snacks/bars/dried fruit throughout the day. The freeze dried breakfast meals are great morning time savers. Just wish they came in smaller portions and a lower price point.

I noticed the same. I wish that someone had told that before I bought the tire. I had heard just good comments on it. Now on the Mitas E-10. It doesn't wobble, but it slides a bit sideways on soft sand or mud when braking hard. Next I might try the Mitas E-09.

How many miles you have? I noticed that after 6000 miles service the QS got much smoother. I think that now I have false neutrals as often with the manual clutch as with the QS.

One more option to consider.

How about those cheap tool boxes? I already have a small waterproof bag for rain gear but I don't carry it all the time.

The difference is not much. Full tank is less noticeable than on the 640 Adv.

Now I am thinking about vinyl wraps used for changing car colors. They are easier to stretch over sharp corners than decals.

I prefer a locking cap. I had a locking Acerbis cap in my 640 Adv. It never stuck due to dust.

What bike carrier is that? Every option I found suggested getting a massive truck to be able to carry the 701.

I was originally planning on a KTM 500 EXC-F 6D before switching to the 701 and pre-ordered a carrier from MotoTote: https://www.mototote.com/max-motorcycle-hitch-carrier.html

There was some rear-end sag and I got flashed at night by people that thought I was running high-beams. The car handled fine but I have a rear sway bar and front strut bar. I’m planning on a coilover suspension that will allow adjustment of the ride height (preload) up or down and that should compensate for the sag.

Ah ok… been looking at mototote myself, will definitely need a massive upgrade on the giulietta to carry around a 701.

I’ve been thread lurking for a while now and thought I’d make an introduction. I had to drive all the way to Oregon (I’m in UT) to buy my LR, but it was worth the trip.

I’m coming from a 990 ADV, so I’ve been very happy so far with the lighter bike and lack of “fuel insecurity” which was always a concern on the big twin, always thirsty for fuel.

FYI there’s also a 701 Long Range Owners group on FB where with almost 200 members - not bad considering a production run of approx 400 bikes worldwide, so feel free to join that group if you’d like:

So far, I’ve only made basic “necessary” mods - skid plate, pegs, handguards, windshield, etc but who knows, maybe a sweet rally tower will make an appearance at some point down the road!

I wonder how much people shit on me on that Facebook group for my lazy videos. I don't have Facebook but please let people know if they see my videos on YouTube that I'm just an amateur and I hope some of the install videos were helpful to others.
