Day two was a great riding day…made it through three states. How many people in cars stop at the state signs for pictures?

Got wet most of the day but the Bonny did great. I learned how to adjust my Airhawk seat, how to wear my rain suit under my riding jacket, and that I can strap my coffee thermos to my roc straps and sneak a sip along the way.

After getting soaked most of the day, each time I came to a state sign, the rain would stop for my pictures. That was nice timing! The trip to my parent’s house in Magnolia is about 1100, miles and I thought I could make it in two days! WRRRRRRONG! I learned that my max is around 400 miles. I cannot imagine how people do an “iron butt”! After a long day, I also learned that there are not that many places to eat. I went most of the day with no food and had a huge craving for a Baconator and, lucky for me, I passed a Wendy’s in Natchez, Mississippi. I also learned that when you finally find a place to eat…keep your riding gear on! The air-conditioning in a fast food place will freeze you out when you are wet.

I had maybe two hours left of daylight and when I spoke with my wife, she asked “are you staying in Natchez in a hotel for the night?”. After a quick search on my phone, the going rate was around $100 bucks, so I decided I would push on. The sun came out, and I crossed the Mississippi river. The remainder of the day (about an hour) was some great riding...snaking back and forth around huge Mississippi delta farmlands with huge turns, no switchbacks, but HUGE turns! So cool! I was on the lookout for a place to stay. Now, I had in my mind that I would just pull over at a church (there are a ton in the delta) and set up in the yard or covered sidewalk. However, I came upon an Army Corps of Engineering park right before dark and quickly turned around. It was such a nice find and no one came by till the next day.

I learned that the Eno Hammock system is getting sent back home. Although the place was great, the sleeping was terrible! I have never sweated so much and gotten eaten so badly by mosquitoes in all my life. I got everything set up and stripped down and immediately thought I stepped in an ant bed, but in reality, it was 10,000 hungry bugs tearing me up. Once I was zipped up in the bug net, they still were able to get to me. Those hungry suckers were able to bite me through the bug net, through the hammock, and then into my arms! I ended up wrapping my arms up with my clothes for extra protection. I was trapped! There was no way to get out and pee or set up the tent! Lesson learned…Eno is out! I maybe got a few hours of sleep.

I am leaving in the next day or two on my summer ride, but I may have to tag along on this one. You see, my Mom graduated from Boone High.
    Enjoy the ride!

The next day turned out to be more great riding with just under 200 miles to go. Got a picture of JJ’s (all my high school friends will understand) then on to my parents' eclectic farm. Going to have a nice bed and Mom's cooking tonight!

I'm leaving for Montana on Monday via a very meandering route that hasn't been set yet (probably only after I'm on the road) Taking about 5 days getting there. If you see a huge, dirty Valkyrie loaded for camping with a big guy in Hi-Viz jacket-holler or at least wave. If you are passing east of Amarillo before Monday-I have space for you to stay.

First rate so far. I've never been a teacher, but I used to live in Orlando, my daughter graduated from Boone HS, and I now live in Arkansas. It's like we're related! Looking forward to the rest of the trip.
