I went to order 15W50 castrol oil from Amazon a few days ago as im going to be doing my first oil change on this bike for the 9k (other service has all be done at dealer). Service manual says castrol 15w50.

I received it and it's 10W50. Looks like a made a mistake when ordering.

After researching more I can't even find a castrol 15W50.

Ok so can I use the 10W50 or should I return it?
Do I order Mobil1 15W50 or goto the dealership and pay extra for their flavor of it?

And yes this is an oil thread. Don't get your panties in a knot.

I had the dealer change mine when I had the bike in for another reason. They put 10W40 in it. When I asked, they said BMW changed their requirement on the oil and 10W40 was fine. I never saw that in writing. I use 10W50 or 20W50. Most all good quality oils will meet the specs required.

Exactly which oil is it, as there are other things like JASO rating to be more concerned about then just viscosity. If you read your book it will also call for JASO MA2 in the friction test category. Many of the synthetic or semi synthetics are within the viscosity ok but only meet MB or MA1, not MA2, MA2 is the highest rank on friction modifiers.

In Aus the BMW dealers I have had services done at use castrol Activ in at least G650GS, G700GS, and G800GS. The JASO MA2 is the important grade in this one.

I have just done a mid service myself using the Activ.

    Looks like JASO MA-2.

    So that's good?
Easier if I don't have to return it - especially because I can do the oil change tomorrow and continue putting miles on my bike this week.

One last question. What about the crush ring. Can I re use it? Can I get it at a local auto parts store or Home Depot?

Full synthetic, just a bit more expensive.

I've reused my crush washer once on both my 650 and 700. Best to have a couple in the shed though.
