I've been scanning my way through a few thousand of my late father's slides including many years of bike trips, rallies, off-road, etc.
We lived in Zweibrucken Germany during the mid-sixties...where he bought a new R69S BMW and travelled through Europe to races, rallies, etc.
Earlier I posted a few pics in the BMW/airhead forum; http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=51879&page=325

Some of these pics from the famed January Elefantentreffen (in 1966 and and 1967) may be of more general interest and hopefully this is a good place.
Most are from the latter (snowier!) year.

Dad's club was made up of Canadian and US military personnel and local German friends.

A very motley looking crew at the Nurburgring!

At the Gasthaus (my mom wasn't up for winter camping even at 25!)

Looks like you get your picture taken when you arrive.

From around the track. They did the famed night time torchlight track tour as well but no pics.

    Sidecar with attached Norton! :lol3
    [IMG]

A Horex...not sure of the model.
The big headlight mods were apparently an effort to compensate for European bulb wattage restrictions at the time (I was told)

    A snowy Vincent
    [IMG]

    A Zundapp I think?

    An Ardie...another old German make
    [IMG]

    A frosty BMW
    [IMG]

I believe there is a BSA hidden behind there. Also from Britain!

A Dutch rider with a BMW R75M Wehrmacht model. This guy really got around and shows up in other rally pics I've seen.

A BMW attached to a Volkswagen body I think! :lol3

Thanks for sharing the pictures! No heated handgrips and fancy Klim suits. Nothing but respect for those guys.

This year's Treffen is in 2 weeks. If I can get my act together I will go this year.....it is only a few hours up the road from here.

I think that might be a 35mm camera? My dad worked in Europe after the war and I remember he had a 35mm camera in a brown leather case that looked very similar to that one around your mom's neck. The little silver circle at the bottom is a knurled tripod screw. ??? Maybe?

    Cool pics!

    Great pics.
    Brought back memories.

Just dug out my rallye hat and I did it in 1970, 1971 and 1972--on old 30 quid Brit singles etc--and we had snow and whiteouts --epic trips--still etched on the memory (and I guess thats what its all about). I'm still doing the odd rallye--last weekend near Dorchester with the ABR crew--250 miles each way with challenging conditions--and camping--at least you know you are still alive. I'll have to dig around to see if I have any phots that can be converted to modern media--but in those days photography was a bit of a specialist hobby and a camera was the last item you needed to carry on a solo in subzero conditions.

Looks like it will be WET again this year--climate change !!

Thanks for all the kind words. I managed to scan a few more from there.

In the gasthaus the previous night this guy mentioned that he had never had a flat tire! He woke up to this and is looking suspiciously at the (innocent!) photographer!

The elephant lost his ear. A beer coaster had to substitute.

Thanks all. A couple more I found here.

Fueling up at the "ring". Nurburg castle in the background I think?

Looks like some sort of kid's riding competition. Perhaps some future ADVrider inmates here! :lol3

I was a little young to compete here or even attend the rally. I found this pic from the same period however...sitting behind a young Canadian and German friend.
No extra points here for guessing the latter! :lol3

    Can't quite match 67 or 68 but here's a couple from the 73 Elephant -

Shot on early colour print film and a bit faded these days. Not as much snow as the earlier years but very cold. Nurburgring was a much nicer venue than the current one by the Czech border - 2013 pic below -
