Updated the OP/Title and the roster. Everyone who requested to be added is there now.

Hopefully with the title updated, more people will hop in and want to participate. I think it will start to attract more attention.

This is a fun idea. Kind of like a mobile Geocache.

I'm in Maryland, seemingly not far from the proposed return path.

We would be glad to have you aboard! I added you to the list of potential riders. The path that we put up is a VERY loose idea of the out/back paths, and is totally subject to change.

I'm on the road a lot, but I'd be happy to do a 300 mile day or two if schedules aligned.

Maybe I missed it but have you come up with any dates for start? I'm planning on doing a 48 state ride hopefully next spring/summer 2020. so i could easily fit something like this in to my "schedule" :lol3

Hey! We have not settled on firm dates. Things have been crazy busy IRL for me. I am open to suggestions as far as dates go. I know that in Virginia our "winter" starts in November ish and runs into March most years. You don't get real riding weather until mid March into April.

riding season is pretty much over for me this year, I'm planning on being fully retired around April next year so thats when i am available for this, I think this would be a fun trip, thanks for coming up with this idea and taking the lead on this.

Let's start it annually on Jan 1st. It might take a few months, but Jan 1st might appeal to lunatics like me. Takes a serious reason to get out and ride in Feb. Where will it start? Atlantic to Pacific with a dip in the Gulf?

Hell no. If you want me riding hundreds of miles in January, I'm out.

By the time it gets back to Maryland it will probably be August. Atlantic, Gulf, Mexico, Pacific, Canada, Atlantic.

This is just a suggestion but isn’t the baton on the west coast now? How about a southern route in early spring in an easterly direction with a northern return route in the summer and possibly a mid section ride back in early fall. Kind of a follow the weather type route. Or for that matter a kind of gathering of the participants in a central location as a way of celebrating the conclusion of the 1st ever annual baton rally! ..... just thinking out loud!

I would think the route will have a mind of it's own.

Starts with one rider taking it to whomever asks for it next.

Will zig zag up and own, some days move a lot, sometimes not move at all.

Mapping an exact route is pretty much impossible what with peoples schedules and such.

Just launch the baton and then follow its progress.

Perhaps riders won't even meet and there is a drop off/pick up place....a business, fire station, relative, friends house, motoshop, whatever.

It doesn't have to be all mapped out beforehand.

Oh if I can find the SPOT...it's free. I also have a bike mount if needed.

if the route makes it up towards new england, i’m in for a segment. i like the idea of doing this as a fundraiser... thanks for putting it together.

    best regards,

Good stuff guys. It may make more sense to do West to East rather than shipping the baton. I honestly hadn’t thought of that. And really, I don’t know that a full planned route is practical like the poster above mentioned. We may just have to wing parts of the “route”

It appears that any type of deadline or schedule may not work out, i like the idea of keeping it loose and once the baton reaches its destination then "celebrate" the goal has been reached. With so many people wanting to do this I think any type of schedule would be almost impossible to work out.
Once the first relay has been competed the second one should be easier since we have a first run for experience on what worked and what did not work, etc.
