I couldn’t find a thread on this. This is my 2nd 2000 1150GS; I just got one, previous was 5 years earlier.

My current one doesn’t have an ABS button. How do I turn off the ABS, assuming it has ABS or course? It’s got the lights in the dash, but it don’t recall seeing the ABS ring in the frn5 or rear tires. I didn’t even think to look when I bought it as I thought ABS was standard equipment.

    Bike is Canadian.

Here in ZAR ABS was an option that came with the Heated Grips, I know weird. I have a 1999 I removed the ABS, never used it and it was annoying, resetting on start up. :photog

An easy what to tell is the lack of a speed sensor on the final drive.

I have a spare Final Drive, non-ABS, but it still has the ABS clearance setting sticker on it, that must cause confusion. :photogand I have a 33/11 to clarify a 33/11 is off an R1100GS. :D

My '03 model does not have an ABS button. That's because it doesn't have any ABS components whatsoever.

Came from the factory that way. I bought it with barely 1K mi. on the odometer. The tank's been off several times, and there's a large empty space in front of the battery where my prior '02 housed an ABS pump.

ABS became standard equipment in '08 or '09, can't remember when exactly. Up to that point it was optional on GS/As... :deal

If you don't have ABS button to turn it off on your handlebar switchgear, then you don't have ABS. The easiest to check is to look at the LH side of front wheel: ABS model would have smaller ring within the front brake rotor with tons of little rectangular slots...

So, I’ve got heated grips, no ABS. Wonder what the ABS dash lights mean?

    Thanks for the input!

The instrument cluster is rather common for both ABS and non-ABS bikes so same light may/will have different meaning for either configuration.

If you don't have Owner's manual for the bike, see if you can find one to download (should be free and legal) and get familiar with the lights and other controls...

IIRC the light is not for the non-existent ABS, but for the brake bulb light failure. It should say brake not ABS though.

Hi guys, I'm in the process of buying a 2001 R1150GS without ABS, so this topic is quite timely. I wonder if it possible to retrofit an ABS system?

    You would need
    ABS II module
    ABS II sensors & rings
    ABS final drive
    ABSII wiring harness
    Left hand switch controls
    Lots of time

The easiest would to get those parts off a wreck.
    A project for sure.......
