Just saw this now..........don't know if it's news or 205.

Affects several models in the 2013 MY only.

"SUMMARY: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2013 C 600 Sport, C 650 GT, F 700 GS, F 800 GS, F 800 GS Adventure, F 800 GT, R 1200 R and R1200 GS motorcycles. Water may enter the side-stand switch preventing the motorcycle from starting or potentially shutting off the motorcycle while it is being ridden.

CONSEQUENCE: An unexpected shutdown increases the risk of a crash.

REMEDY: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the side-stand switch, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in April 2014. Owners may contact BMW at 1-800-831-1117.

NOTES: Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

    1. Looks as if BMW discontinued using ALL of the FAULTY side stand switches on/about September 19, 2013.
Why are we just finding out about it...6 months later?

Guess better than GM's 10 YEAR ignition switch problem...but...

    or...

    2. If BMW didn't discover the faulty switch until recently...(last couple months?) did they INSTALL these same switches in Model Year 2014 bikes? Post...9/19/2013. Seems improbable that ALL the defective switches would end up being installed at the exact END of the model year.:huh

    3. Will there be a recall of MODEL YEAR 2014 bikes, as well? Stay tuned...I vote probably.

The campaign notice letter from BMW to NHTSA Enforcement indicates BMW was aware of the problem July, 2 2012.

I spoke with BMW Customer relations earlier this morning about this recall and they knew nothing. Also asked about the status of the fuel pump flange recall. They told me a letter was sent in Februrary to owner announcing the recall!:eek1
I told I had not gotten a letter and suspected none had been sent or there would have been a buzz on the internet. They said they would get back to me in 3-5 business days.

I'm not a happy camper. I had plans to ship my R12R to Europe but when I mentioned the fuel flange campaign to the shipping agent he told me that Customs will not allow a bike to leave the country with an open campaign. So I bought a F800GT in January and took it to the shipping agent this Monday..... Now this switch campaign applies to both my R12R and the F800GT.

I'm hoping the GT has cleared customs and is aboard the ship. Today the BMW Customer Rep. told me the recall can not be honored in Europe for the GT and they will NOT provide the part to take to Europe for replacement. I gotta buy the switch, take it to Europe and pay the dealer in Europe to install it!

WTF.... Never again will I buy a BMW product, never, no car, no motorcycle. It just isn't worth the hassle.

    Rant over.

The letter says BMW discovered the issue in July 2013, not 2012.

In the mail today I received the happy news that my sidestand switch is not up to standards. Apparently water may infiltrate it causing a malfunction. Joy. :1drink

The fix is a dealer replacement of the switch, which will take about an hour.

I called the dealer, yes my VIN is on the recall list. They will call me when parts are available.

I just received my letter but my bike is a '14.

Still the letter says it applies to my vehicle.

    So is it '13-'14?

Its a 14 as long as you own it, but when you trade it in they will look up the value in the 2013 column :deal

Caught me off guard with this year stuff as well.
But I think all the official 14's have the steering stabilizer ..... yup mine has one.

maybe some countries charge them fines for recalls, and by dumping them all in the same model year bucket it saved them money :eek1

Hmmm mine was built on 22 Aug 2013, but no recall issued in Europe so far... according to the EPC it is the same part used in both ECE and DOT regions...

Interestingly the part was updated in Aug 2013 because the previous switch contained more than 0.1% Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate in contravention to EU regulations... perhaps the updated unit had a bad batch at the beginning of the run?
