Cards win 2-1 vs. SF as Wacha, trying for his majors-leading 15th win, goes 7 and gives up just one run but gets no decision. Heywerd exits with hammy tightness after the 2nd inning. Piscotty triples and scores the winning run in the 8th on a wide throw to first by Giants shortstop Eddie Vedder.
Cubs have won 15 of the last 17. They are well in the wildcard and just 2 back from 2nd in the best division in baseball. This is getting good.....
I read a story today that the Cubs sent out "post season" ticket request today They did win again today, the Bucs lost and the Cards are beating the Padres... What a season
OMG The Cards are playing the worst game of the season right now.... WOW I haven't seen them this bad since the 90's
Hope Arrieta's no-no is a springboard for Cubbies to chase down the Pirates. Now's the time, too, as Cubs have 6 home games vs. sub-.500 teams (CIN, ARI) before going to STL next Monday. PIT's upcoming roadtrip has 6 of next 9 vs. sub-.500 teams (MIL, CIN) bracketing a visit to STL. Cards start a HUGE 9-game homestand against WAS, PIT and CHI. After that, the schedule definitely favors the Cards: just 6 games vs. winning teams (CHI has 11, PIT 13). But what REALLY favors the Cards is the likelihood of September returns by Matt Adams, Matt Holliday, Randal Grichuk, Jon Jay, and some nearly-forgotten pitcher named Wainwright. Cards went 18-9 in August and averaged about 17 wins/month playing without three of their top players. Matheny will have half of those position starts on the bench. That's depth. Jason Hairwood will probably play some CF to keep Piscotty in the lineup. Meanwhile, PIT started August 5.5 games behind STL. They go 19-8 in Aug, and today they're still 4.5 games back. Gotta be frustrating. So, so, deliciously frustrating. Time to win, baby. Starting today. Go Cards!
WAS-STL Another good one tonight. Tied at 5 going to the bottom of the ninth. Lots of men LOB all night by both teams, lots of infield hits, walks, 2 Cards HBP (Reynolds out, hand). Difference between tonight and last night: instead of hitting into a DP with two men on and nobody out, Garcia bunts and a run scores on a wild throw to 3rd, followed by another RBI for Piscotty to tie the game. Janssen is a spaz. Edit: Aaaaaand the walk-off HR for Moss! Mozeliak took some grief for trading Kaminsky to CLE to get Moss after Holliday's quad injury, but Moss, like Hayworld, is coming around.
Now looky here, Cubbies: losing 2 of 3 to Cincy ain't gonna get it. I'm rooting for ya, but that music stops when you travel to STL on Monday. So make hay while the semi-lowly Dbacks are in town, coz you don't want to go into Busch hanging by yer fingernails with the season on the line. Maximum Ws for Cubs and Cards this weekend!
Just tuned in myself. I agree with mr. doug: golly. At least the Reds are beating the Bucs. After STL lost the rubber game AT HOME last night to the Pirates, I was all like, no biggie. Then I was all like, I hope the Pirates don't get all uppity. Then I was all like, maybe the Cubs can scare the Pirates into a September collapse. Now I'm all like, golly. Also, anyone checking out the Mets/Nats game? Hell of a show.
Nice to get the first one in STL, especially with Dan Haren on the bump. Cards are too good to let a 9-0 loss affect them - but Cubs are so young they might think it means more than it it does. Good start to a long meaningful road trip!
Dafuq? Cards were totally robbed tonight. Sun was in my eyes. We had the game in the bag. But the umps suck. Couldn't see the ball. Field sucks. Something wrong with the ball. Empty stadium sucks. Lighting in Cincy is horrible. Visitors' dugout sucks. Shouldn'ta pitched Garcia on just 5 days' rest. Hot dog water at Great American Ball Park sucks. Two on, no out, no runs. Two leadoff walks, no runs. Dog with kraut, nothing. Dog without kraut, still nothing. Switch from beer to margaritas, still no offense. Go to the bourbon, still no. Maybe tomorrow, then. But for now: c'mon Brewers!
Can't agree on the Cardinal love, but I'm with you on a Brewers beat down of the Bucs! Cubs hot on their tails.
