2016 DAKAR "Cliff Notes" locked and loaded: :deal

This is the place for inmates and lurkers who haven't kept up with the information flow on the OFFICIAL DAKAR COVERAGE f5irehose, to catch up on the most important stuff.

"Cliff Notes" is accessed and only posted on by the f5 RACING mods, who put up only the most interesting and relevant posts and information from the main thread... this includes some photo's, video links, relevant inmate and contributor posts and even result summaries etc.

Simply, it's the best of the catch, from the f5irehose net that the mods on duty comb back through and f5ish out... for those of you that just HAD to duck out to work, or NEEDED to grab a couple of hours sleep... :D:lol3

Cliffnotes for this year will be a minimalist version; comprised of chronological links to the route summary/fire in the hole "start" posts for each LEG - as they appear in the main f5irehose thread.

Only the most relevant (key posts) from each day will be posted to "Cliffnotes".
This will not be a "real time" thread (like the main coverage f5irehose) - although the voluntary f5 staff will attempt to update whenever possible - it will be anywhere from 6 to 12 hour "review" of what has transpired on the main thread...

2016 DAKAR Cliff Notes Daily Index:

This is to enable inmates to refer back and check something earlier in the rally, or just click on the link you want below, to jump forward to the relevant DAY - in either the "cliffnotes" information contained in this thread... or the special stage start of each day as it appears on the main f5irehose coverage thread. :deal

    Hi team F5,

for the second year in a row I've organized the Dakar fantasy game. Rules are the same as last year - pick up 3-5 competitiors from three categories (bikes, cars, trucks) and swap them around before every stage, while trying to score as much points as you can. It's still free of charge and your last years' login will work if you haven't forgotten the password :) (in which case you can reset it by a click of a button). If you can't find your favourite rider on the market list just ask here and I will add him!

You're all warmly welcome to join the fun -> fantasy-point.com

    Cheers, royle

Here's my Prologue stage roadbook. It's really hard to read the small print, unless you're in Buenos Aires.

Things starting to get serious here in Buenos Aires... Went to pick up the bike to the port with Team Pan Am who were really kind to give me a lift and then started working on my bike together with the other 2 Italians racing Malles Moto, Francesco and Diocleziano. Gonna have to work a lot tomorrow to get everything finished!

Actually, those photos are very telling. Look at the "Best Dakar" results and other than Laia, who is odd man out? JBB with a (relatively) lowly 7th place finish s best. I'd say this is his last, best chance and if he doesn't win or place on the podium, HRC needs to seriously consider their decision to continue hitching their wagon to the Barreda motor.

No dog and no bike at the moment :D

It's funny that they have them on their old team bikes in the photos :lol2
HRC is known to keep the riders, the team structure and such. Which is very weird considering exactly what you say. No results. From Barreda's side is very understandable. In which team he could go next? :scratch
From the managerial side, HRC has done everything they can to be the odd ones out. They bleed riders to KTM, which has a smaller budget (= smaller rider payment) and they do not seem able to pull together a team structure like KTM does. With Sam out, I am sure Matthias and Toby can pull the Job, and positive that KTM knows exactly when and what to say to the riders. Unless the young guns make it a cockfight early on and they loose control, then HRC's best bet is Speedy.
I'd like to see him win like hell. He is a good rider, nice person and the view of him watching his bike on fire is engraved in my mind. I hope he pulls it together and his bike behaves for the rally. I'd like to see who will play Jeremias role this year if the sh[]t hits the fun... :patch

Catanese's Twalcom ride. The Malle Moto way. I like the padded seat.

    Hey Balkan,

For a fixed tower, aluminium setup you are looking (depending on the design and equipment used) anything from 4-7 kilograms for a normal setup. That can easily reach double figures depending on what you put on the tower.(I have discussed with Dakar riders and there were 14-15 kilogram beasts there, having anything from clutch plates, radiator hoses, front sprockets, .... Half the bike on the worst possible place). That includes the iritrack, the antennae, roadbook, SpeedoCAP, Tripmasters, Roadbook, Roadbook plate, lights, fusebox. Minus Balise and spare parts that people like to carry on their tower. CF towers weigh nothing, but the KTM is immensely complex, I don't even wanna think how the HRC was produced. They've gone ballistic again with their integrated onto the tower connectors. At least KTM protects all the cabling inside the CF 'Π' section structure.
For a lite tower, like the one Manuel is running, on the bars you are looking to 2-3 kilos depending on the gear chosen and the roabook plate design etc. At present no CF roadbook plates are present in factory bikes, only the ''prototype'' all in one unit from KTM.

Sad news and the race has not started yet...

It was a bit silent from my side, but hey I'm there :wings It's been terribly busy here and I have a lot of stuff to do still, but took a few weeks of from work again and I will be here to bring you trackingdakar.nl.

First thing to arrange: a nice server that will survive all you F5'ers who are eager to flame it. Some are there already, but please be patient... keep in mind I'm one year older and slower again too :D
