The new role and goals as sporting director Marc Coma Dakar 2016

The Spanish, once champion of competition rider, took on this new challenge, which says its main objective "is to have a race without accidents".

BUENOS AIRES The Spanish Marc Coma defined as a "great challenge" and "opportunity to return" this first experience as living in this 2016 Dakar sporting director. "My biggest goal is to have a race without incident. That everything goes perfectly and that a sporting level, an attractive competition. I think that is guaranteed by the level of pilots and the presence of the new generation of Dakar," he said Coma . "This offer to be the new director of the Dakar competition was also an unexpected surprise for me. The motorcycle rider has in mind at a time of a sporting career jump cars, or be 'team manager', or create your own structure but never thought this opportunity, a real pride and recognition of the organization, "was sincere five-time winner of the event (2006, 2009, 2011, 2014 and 2015). Now, in relation to the need to design a new route after the fall of Peru as a participant country, Coma stressed how difficult it has meant everything. "It has not been an easy year but in the Dakar context us in a difficult situation always moving. This time we had to put together a tour to trial, I think we would not have succeeded without the experience of ASO team all these years in South America" , he pointed. With respect to the layout of the route, at the various locations where the race passes, sporting director noted that some changes have been applied to the competition. "We tried to bring some sporting innovations such as the marathon stage in Jujuy format park closed that since 1998 not was implemented. In addition to long stages other than pure sprint with a difficult navigation, especially in the second week "he said in relation to the new 2016. When asked about the competition on motorcycles, Catalan was sincere and said: "The situation is that in the last ten years we have shared the wins on motorcycles between Cyril (Despres) and I, and now he's in cars and I'm as sports director. That has changed the landscape and I think every team has at least one pilot prepared to win, plus the new generation of enduro champions arriving, leaving a very exciting prospect in this category. " Finally he referred to the future of competition in 2017 with a reassuring message for South America: "Since the arrival of the Dakar in South America have discovered many stunning places we have left so many know and multiple to return Both Peru and Chile try to return. part of the route of the Dakar. " "The Dakar is a race evolving but has established itself in South America with an imprint that nobody would have imagined in 2009 and there is still much to discover. But it is also true that the origins are in Africa, although north by geopolitical conditions when it is impossible to return. "

Neutralize the ss for cars and trucks I presume? Bikes were all in the ass...

Hope the spectators are alright...ASO usually neutralizes a stage if there is a death. Hope this isnt the case.

Instead of the special internship in the traffic jam. But of course that is nothing compared to the reason. A car that started for us in the audience is hit. Four wounded is said. The Secial so we cancelled, and it's on to the bivouac. The race is so still not begun.

" today it was actually kind of cool, finally back a little bit in the rally rhythm to come. We had a pretty long (in approximately 350 kilometers) not so funny link stage, the many spectator at the track edge the applaud and a wave, but made it more fun. Already an extremely cool feeling! I am pleased that there is now finally went off. The slightly more than ten kilometres at the prologue i dos and tried not to make any mistakes. Around a little in the navigation system to get in. My position and the residue, I believe that this is a pretty good starting point for tomorrow, when it starts."

    From Annie's blog:

I would restart time qualifiers at 18:03, but they kept the remaining five cars in front of me, the distance was stopped due to a crash. We were asked to take off their helmets, etc. - it would take time to clear up. For safety shut all the way, and the rest of the field could not implement it.
A nasty crash then. Many people were injured - there were several ambulances and helicopters to the scene.

It is different rumors about what happened, but obviously it was a serious accident. Car # 360, a Chinese female driver in a Mini with experienced co-driver, drove off the road and right in among the spectators.

Really sad that someone running of the prologue, it may be as well not do! The prologue, which is only 11 km, is the only heating, and the running time does not affect even the end result. Then you should absolutely not run at full throttle. Rejset is 14 days, so you should save your energy!

It's also annoying that participants have so wrong attitude to this competition. As tempting fate! Driving so recklessly when you should take it easy - opportunities to adventures are plentiful later in the rally.

Tomorrow starts crews mainly in numerical order. Otherwise, start it according to the results of the previous section - but now it became the no of.

Cliffnotes will be the ONLY recap/highlight thread that we post/lock/sticky... there is enough to administer already.

But if Ted (Deadly99) is gracious enough to do such a recap each day... of course I will post it to the Cliffnotes, AND include it in the "Cliffnotes index" (post #2 of cliffnotes) so that it can be found easily as each leg subsequently concludes.

That is an awesome photo. I think Sainz might have hit that crossing a bit fast :lol3. If that's all it takes to clear the bodywork off the new pugs what are they going to look like in 2 weeks!?!?

Looks like one aspect of the matador and team PUG's marocco test program, did not include a high speed water crossing test...? Ingression of water at high speed, under the front wheel arches caused the front bodywork to "evacuate"...??? :eek7:eek7:eek7

Don't think this is a fair response to imply reckless driving when she only knows rumors. Perceived recklessness is a matter of perspective. It doesn't take much to make a perfectly in-controlled vehicle go over the edge.

It is unfortunate for all involved, but this type of thing will happen again when spectators are near an open course without any type of barrier. Walls at race tracks are not there for the racers safety.

Check out Svitkos form, for a guy who came in 9th only 11 seconds down he's in no rush through the water crossing, in contrast to some of the other pics. Looking after his bike.

    Judge for yourselves... :deal

Looks like the Chinese lady in #360, got just a bit too much rear rebound off a quick jump, nosed it in, got squirrely, overcorrected a touch... and off into the weed's where some spectators were... You can see the official security vehicle in the foreground of the third photo in the sequence.

An unfortunate racing incident... end of story.
