I love it when someone out navigate someone else to beat them. It's the only way I beat any of my friends when we go riding

In the old days you had 2 identical trunks and they would leapfrog ahead. So, you did not have access to the same trunk two days in a row. The essentials therefor had to be doubled up. Additionally, you open your trunk and the part you need is in the trunk at the next day's bivvy.

Yes, the Orga will carry one set of wheels (with tyres mounted) for you, plus they provide the tents/sleeping area. I believe the bedding is your own responsibility. Depending on the bivouac location, sometimes you get to sleep in a sports hall/mess hut rather than a tent, which can actually be preferable to a tent the regular assisted competitors are in!

Regarding packing - yes, you have to pack really light... and you'll most likely end up stinking by the time you collect your medal ;o)

Regarding this navigation/follow the leader topic, wasnt there an incident in Africa with the BMW - if memory serves me correctly - that "dressed" the team all the same way (perhaps Richard Sainct ?) to cause a "break" the follow the leader game. Perhaps some senior member still recalls this.

New around here, hi everyone, this is an awesome way to follow the Dakar!!! the insights are great!

Was it Jutta Klindschmidt that he gave the "Baja bump" to in Africa? Whoever it was nearly crapped her pants and went crying to the officials

Yes, you can drop out of Malle Moto if you decide you need the help of a more experienced team or mechanic. I do not believe there is a penalty applied

I think he might be more "mature" now :lol3
But yeah he does seem to be a little more reserved this time around... perhaps because it has been much cooler

In 2009 there was a 15 minute penalty for dropping out of the Marathon Class. I was with the Pan-Am team (Johan Street and David Schwarz) and Jonah was originally entered in the Marathon Class. The team decided to change the engine on the rest day, thereby bumping him into the open class. The 15 penalty came as a surprise to the Pan-Am guys but Jonah was running 2nd outright 2 days later - when he fell and broke his wrist ( bumm3r ).
