Alexander Smith appears to be having a solid ride also. Not a lot of info or pics showing up, but seems to always be solidly in 40th to 50th place and getting the job done.
Looks like Alrajhi in the Toyota is having a good stage. Finally found the speed he had last year? He's been surprisingly quiet so far, had me wondering because he set a few fires last year.
Nice article, whilst it's always good to see the continual development and progress by the factory teams at the sharp end of the field, to me, it's guys like Manny and the many other private entries that encapsulate the true spirit of the Dakar

“It's a long way away yet”
“It wasn't a bad day at all. I'm actually pretty happy. I led for the whole course today and made the tracks. It's the first time I've done that, which I'm pretty stoked about. It didn't start off in the best way. Around 22 kilometres there were a couple of cars stuck in the sand. I went to go around one of them but it pulled in front of me and I hit it. So it wasn't the best start to the race. We just regrouped and made sure to be back on top of the road-book. It's been a good day, so I can't complain. There were a couple of tricky bits of navigation, but I just took my time with them and made sure I was on the right track. We didn't make any mistakes today so we're really happy with that and I think it puts us in a good spot now. So hopefully tomorrow we can do the same thing. For leading out the trail and leading out the tracks, I'm stoked at the pace I was going at. It's going to be a close fight all the way to the finishing line, I think. It's a long way away yet, but we're pushing hard and I'm pushing along nicely and feeling comfortable, so we'll see how we do. Once we get to the end of this first week and the second week kicks in a little bit, that's when these little things go wrong, plus the bikes have been through a lot already in the first week. So I think it's going to be pretty difficult at the finishing line of this one. The pace of the first week we've had so far has been up there pretty high, so compared to what last year's Dakar was, the pace of that first week wasn't that strong. But we're doing the best we can. As long as we minimise the mistakes, we should be pretty good”.
I'm proud of him, and he's the only racer to ever sent me a thank you card, class act.
Agree with most of your analysis but disagree on the above. Only two years ago Gonçalves was announced at the start of Dakar as "being there to help Joan achive victory", the team clearly declaring they had one and only one leading rider, JBB.
Also, despite Barreda evidently having calmed down and his results in 2015 may have been down to sheer lasck of luck but in 2014 he threw away a perfectly good 2nd overall because he (or the team?) wanted yet one more stage victory (remember? 2014 last real stage, 1st place was totally out of reach, he had a huge margin over 2nd overall, a 50th place would have sealed a silver statue. Instead he went WOT and managed to throw it away ending 7th or so).
On the same topic (resources/strategy) available for both Gonk and Barreda, I can't remember exactly when (2013?), but there were times at which Gonk was the best placed rider and ended up the last Honda on track (physically), the team failing to provide someone with the role of water carrier. Unthinkable at KTM.
No, he had a pretty good short term contract!

The more you read about Manny and hear the stories from Neduro, Llewellyn and others, the more in awe you get of the guy's shear audacity and balls it takes to do it his way.

Regardless of what the reason for todays failure was.
IMHO nobody else is to blame but HRC themselves. Not even Barreda. Constant bike redesigns... inability to manage/reign in their own riders, bad strategic decisions, catastrophic equipment failures, missed rider recruiting opportunities it goes on and on. Far too many variables that are even to all of us keyboard jockeys obvious but somehow unaddressed by the team.
Really makes you shake your head.
I hope they just don't give up because that will be the pr stunt of all ages for any other off road brand.
