I think that Honda must be a pretty good bike, since everybody who rode it was or is pretty fast. Honda is known for strong motors and I doubt they forgot how to make them. Other than Bam Bam's motor failure the others haven't had equipment issues that were not self inflicted. Is this HRC team really a customer team? By that I mean Honda farmed out the effort to a separate organization? It seems to me the motorcycle should have more protection to better survive the environment the riders are racing through. Speedy's water loss should have had some sort of alarm system as an example. Maybe that area is where HRC needs to step it up. I can't speak to the complaints that HRC only wants to win with one rider. They don't race like that elsewhere, unless there is one rider far enough ahead in the championship that they need to protect his lead to insure success.

It's not really a marathon if there is an engine waiting there. Is it?

That just sounds like a rather pointless exercise for everybody...WC's included...only to save the face of HRC.

That quoted temp is likely not the real temp in the dunes. The "track" temp is likely much higher.

So Gonc is back.....I hope. Not that I care about Honda but I am afraid that they could pull if they can't compete.

But ffs they can build a 280 BHP MotoGP bike but no rad cover :loco

should order a KTM powerparts one :D

And what, Gonk will now still be in the race? WTF

People managed the heat, likely did damage to their bikes (marathon stage), put strain on their bodies, risked their race...ARG!!!!

Is Dakar getting "soft"? It wasn't many years ago they lost 60% of the field (if memory serves) in Fiambala...stage wasn't stopped....people borrowed donkeys and rode back to the bivouac for spare engine.

Yep - There is a warning in the Owner's Manual of the '97 FE400 I had (STOLEN, and LEO really didn't give a shit - no money to be made from recovering stolen property, even when told where to look/who to look at), writ LARGE, that says, in essence, "DO NOT allow engine to idle for more than one minute or you will BURN IT UP!!!" (no fan on the radiator)

“Today was a really hard stage”

[IMG]“For sure, today was a really hard stage. From the beginning there was a lot of navigation a lot of off-piste with dunes and vegetation. For sure, the heat was important today, so I think the race has been stopped at CP2 because the heat was too much. Let's see how I finish today. I saw Paulo at CP1 and I think he had a problem with his bike. I think he crashed and broke something off the bike. The Dakar is like this, you know. You have to take care always until the last kilometre. I was trying to ride regularly, trying to push with confidence and not take many risks. It's important to take care of the bike and take care of the body by avoiding crashes. We still have some stages in front of us and we have to try and be regular. I feel really good, I have confidence and I'm really happy with the bike and with the team. The team did an awesome job, so I'm really happy”.

It would be rather "adventourous" to send the car field into a competitive stage in the extreme heat and circumstance, when your resources are full up recovering the motorcyclists, quads (and assume cars that will sucumb to same)

biggest question I have (I can't confirm from the WP's or ASO site) is... DID the first (12 motos at this point in time) actually make the full stage to the ASS... and the rest of the moto field were stopped at CP2. :ear

I am "off" now... thank's for today, I'll see ya's after TV4France 14:40 DAKAR ARG time. (18:40 CET) :wave

Just catching up after totally losing interest on the rest day, thinking Coma made a comeback with a decent Dakar yesterday, now, seriously?

This is one expensive South American trail ride!
