    I translate
You will have heard by now, Dakar endend in a dramatical way for me ...
38km before the finish line I ran out of fuel . Of course I tried to get some fuel from following participants but in vain. After 5 hrs in 48° Centigrade the organisation decided to fly me out by heli for safty reasons.
I'm endlessly sad about this end

Mmmm, a quad upset in the making?

Bas Nijen Twilhaar is on a Can Am quad this year, supporting Kees Koolen's effort (he blew up his gearbox 2 days ago) and is making great progress through the field.

Bas started in 20th spot and has climbed to around 10th today. Before we know he might even be a top 10 finisher before the event end. He is only 15 hours down on 10th spot overall...

TSC says he's in a car in a snowstorm with a laptop and his F5 WP/CP isn't working too well. That means his satellite/hyperwarp downlink from the AlienF5 planet Deadly mentioned must be acting up.

That doesn't seem possible. Did Gonk make it to CP2? Will he now be reseeded into the race??! <---- poor attempt at sarcasm BTW.

I am sad to see Gonk crash and get the final boot. But as has been said a million times before, the race is never won in the first week. Also....TOBY! What the hell is that kid on?!

Why don't they just let them race to cp1 for the next days and save us from waiting to get the clusterf@ck news? I am mobile at the moment, but if that is indeed from today, they should change the name to racegate.

If you were in the Dakar after spending all that cash and because you are a bit slower than the Top Guns you are further down the field you would be pissed that the Org then kept cutting the stages short so most days you only got to ride to CP2. Will the finisher's trophies be modified to show percentage of the ACTUAL rally traveled. Makes you think the Dakanistas will look down on anyone with a 2016 finishers medal, I reckon a partial refund is in order !

Safe to say it's not a joke,

    • 15:40 : Bikes: the special is stopped at CP2!
The exceedingly difficult weather conditions caused by the extreme heat and the large number of riders in difficulty means that, for obvious safety reasons, the special has been halted at CP2 (after 243 km). However, the car and truck races will continue until the end of the special.
This by far has been the year to be in Dakar if all you wanted was a finishers medal!

Have faith - the top 15 all made it to the ASS...

I'm sure at this stage of the race their times will stand and the rest will get bogy times - it's not as if it really matters all that much now with just two stages to go?

Mind you - Laia is going to be PISSED!!!

As I am fond of quoting, Simon Pavey once said to me: "No one minds if they cut the stage short, in fact by the second week, you're praying for it!"

It is going to be f**king brutal out there for the bottom half of the field... they will certainly feel they have earned their finisher's medals.

That's exactly the point, they have been spared the decision to withdraw, it's a joke! And it's not funny anymore.
