    Morale is good!! :
" yesterday (Wednesday), It was finally a beautiful day rally with a bit of navigation and sand, but the race director did go together bikes, trucks and cars. With Olivier Bread, we went on a bad cape and we we're a little lost, we lost time. Today (Thursday), I left 18th and I attacked a little in the special, but I've been slowed by the dust, told David Casteu on his arrival in San Juan. Then, the race was arrested at cp2 because there was no more helicopters for security. This rally is difficult for me because, at the places where I can make a difference, the race is blocked, I'm a little frustrated. I can't really make a difference. It's a dakar particular, which seems to be traced to Peugeot. Tomorrow (read today), It's a big step in a wheelchair that could be stopped in case of flooding. In spite of everything, morale is good, the bike is clean. Now, you must end this dakar and make the best possible way, but it's hard to fight on this ground in the face of young drivers who aren't scared of nothing ".

And I would add that #137 Rob Smits is no back-marker or wanna-be 'tourist' as some on here refer to those not right up at the sharp end - he is an exceptional riding talent when it comes to us mere mortals - I've seen him race (and win) a number of times on the Tuareg Rallye in Tunisia and Morocco, and he (together with his father) absolutely annihilate the competition:

Its humbling to see how this level of performance compares on the world stage - and I would add that Rob was comfortably inside the top 50 for much of this year's Dakar.

At CP1 (after 155 km) Pablo Quintanilla is sustaining his momentum. Credited with the best provisional time, he currently leads Price and Meo, who are riding together. It should be noted that the gap between the Chilean and the Frenchman has shrunk a little. The French KTM rider now trails the Husqvarna rider by “only” 3'06'', which corresponds with the time lost by Meo to wait for his team leader, Toby Price, who set off 3 minutes after him.

    Since there's a bit of a lull......

What is the rule for fuel tank size for 2016 ? The 450 rule saw fuel tank size come back to 35 Litre, but I heard reference on the TV coverage of 30 Litre tanks on one of the bikes - is 30L the maximum allowed for just what that particular bike was running ?

Super close splits; I have to assume there are no dunes [yet].

I know exactly that feeling, that's why I'm back working on a team as a mechanic or competeing myself.

Being a competitor is SOOOO easy compared to being on the other side of the fence as the ORG.

No dunes at all I believe - the course description says the stage is run mainly on narrow mountain tracks today.

Slightly dominated since the start of the special in the battle pitching him against Kevin Benavides (Honda), Helder Rodrigues (Yamaha) is not giving up. Better than that, at CP1 (after 155 km) he has regained a small bit of time over his rival for fifth place in the overall ranking. The gap, which was 31 seconds in favour of the Yamaha rider, has now dropped to 24 seconds… the battle is heating up!

OK - a 2nd question.......... is there no penalty in 2016 for the first engine change ? No-one in the top 20 places has more than a couple of minutes penalty - you can't tell me that all top 20 bikes are on their original engine. Looking at the whole remaining field, only a handful have more than 15 minutes of penalty. ( Several have 8 hours of penalties !! )

In that case I think the car podium is pretty well decided, short of a major crash or breakdown. Gordon or Dumas might make a few OA positions, though.
