Seems contradictory to keep shortening stages in the name of safety and then reverse the order an inject the fastest guys into a dust storm.
Every rider outside the top 10 has been let go at 30 sec intervals!!

While I don't know the background of every single winner (ie whether they immigrated from another country etc) the only one that looks like from an English speaking country is Giniel de Villiers from South Africa. English is listed as an official Language along with Afrikaans. And he certainly speaks it well enough to be a native speaker.

You can also cheer for Jurgen Van Den Goorbergh, I think he was winning his class.

I know what you're saying... it's primarily so that the order for the final podium is not too mixed up - the first riders away tend to physically finish the stage first so are ahead for the liaison, arrive at the holding area before the leaders and so it goes...

Of course it is going to/does get mixed up a bit over a stage that is this long (180km), and I'm sure some faster riders will have the complication of riding in some dust - but on the whole most of the competitors now are just riding for the finish, so will let them by.

It's a very different 'safety' issue compared to heat-stroke of course - dust is kind of to be expected.

The bike pictured is a 690 with 450 Rally parts bolted to it . . . like mine. It makes an awesome bike. Total weight ready to travel is about 390 pounds. It can carry 8.9 US gallons, which gives you a range of about 420 miles.
