So what strategies do the yellow plates incorporate today? Do some just take it easy today so as to let others be first on course tomorrow?

How is it different to a rider/driver that makes a mistake/mechanical failure, in the first 11 km's of a 200 km SS tomorrow...?

The net result is the same.

Balkan Boy: Its the nature of a prologue, I think its better than simply seeding the riders. Brings another dynamic in; common on many rallies and the Dakar in years past.

I don't agree about the risk. Anyone entering knows that this is the most dangerous racing event out there. If people don't ride to the road conditions, its their responsibility and their risk to take. So if some race it like the quads, fine. But others will be slower and still end up winning. Its a long race as you know.

Here is De Villiers at the start of the SS

Then that rider has the other 189km to make up time and for someone else to break down. :D

    Edit:
My point is that equipment, riders and tactics are prepared for 500-1000km rides. This is short format is a disadvantage for anyone playing the long game.

I reckon they will crack it at full gas. No reason not to go slow unless it is dangerous (relatively) not to; like if the field was full of dust. But I forgot that they had lots of rain so it should be nicely torn up and with plenty of lines to follow.
