That would be really cool to investigate.
Here in PA, after coal died out, alot of upper central pennsylvania towns started to die, whole communities migrated, and now there is the Shale boom and the rental prices are like something you'd see in a major metro area. Mixed reactions are had about it, of course.
Same goes with Detroit, a place high on my list. Big boom and big bust.
Interesting people to talk to, and photography gold mines!

    Good idea.

Are they that bad? I have repel deet 100 and am hoping that'd do the trick.

Chekika has been closed for sometime now. Sign is not even out on SR997 anymore. Wasn't much there anyways and the property the volunteers stayed is was pretty rundown March or so when I was out there. There is some water management ground you could work your way onto for riding but they have they blocked off now.

I cannot type for Alaska, but they can be a bother out west.

In MN, they are bigger and relentless. The mosqutoes on the east coast are pussys compared to these guys.
    Their numbers are fascinating.

The net is light and easy to stow away.
Go to the Alaska thread and ask them what they think.

    ----
I was just watching the 6:30pm news, and oil is like $31.5 a barrel. The lowest since 2003.
    Total bust.

Check out this ride report entry. I had just left the Teddy R. National Park in N.D. and started hand railing the Interstate.

The road was good to go. The rain added some grip and kept the dust down. It was cool and windy, so I put on my warming layers under my gear.

The DR loves the dirt. The more dirt the better in the Great Plains.

I road as far as I could. I saw a lot of oil pumping deals, and plenty of big rigs.

Things came to an end, so I back tracked until I found Old Highway number 10.

I noticed plenty of new homes that were built along the old 10 W highway.

I then road to the town of Dickinson. She is a large town.

Well, it had been over 3,000 miles, and I was in the need of an oil change. I pulled into their Honda/Yamaha place and waited at the counter for a while, and the personnel behind the desk seemed too busy to even say hello, so I left.

The manager followed me outside as I was getting my gear on. Which was good of him to do so. He gave me the low down. They were about a month behind on doing service and such. He said 15,000 people are suppposed to move into the town this year.
    Very well.
He said that further east things would get better.
He had owned the place for a while. I think he was going to retire soon."

So, after leaving the N.Park, I would recommend going north for a spell and then east and check out the heart of the boom.

Good advice. I94 across ND is a pretty quick ride but terribly boring. Jog up north and jump on some gravel and heat east or at the very least take HWY 200 east and go check out the big lake on your way by .

Also, when your in MN you might want to take HWY 1 from Ely to Isabella to get to the north shore. That will get you into more of the Boundary Waters area and the shore drive is decent. It might be busy but to me it would be better than taking HWY 53 south.

I was just out there again a week ago and yep, the signs are all gone, the volunteer housing has been looted and the fire station that was there has been leveled. I thought all that was like that last year, but I couldn't remember for sure. Its still a nice little ride out into the area, but nothing really to do except ride there and back.

Spur off to visit Dinosaur N.M. in Colo.
It should be a N.P. and ride to the bottom (echo park road) and camp. It will be a highlight if not the highlight.

    You're right!
You probably freaked out if you looked at the map I posted.

Those dots are just objectives! Google just filled in the roads between the points.
It would take forever to build a google map of the roads I want to take.
You should know that map man :lol3

I'm planning out a few days at a time, seems to work when I go on trips.

When I get closer to the west, I will probably buy butler maps. Seems like a no brainer.

    But for now, southern rain!
