Rod F finished in front of Helder so I'm guessing he'll pull over and stare vacantly at the side of his bike for two minutes tomorrow.

It would not be just mud, it is Paraguay mud!!! Difficult to explain, but it is terrible, just for the reference of those who have some years, the Camel Trophy back in early 90 could not conquer Paraguay mud!! (It depends obviously how much it rains)

DJ Nos and JC Sal were the only local SA riders to take advantage of home court for the prologue... An otherwise wasted opportunity. This year's SA Dakar is a story of a youth movement and minimal Dakar pedigree. The reigning champ Toby Price having only 2 previous campaigns under his belt.

The elderly veteran here, Paulo Goncalves is probably racing in the twilight of his Dakar career as a serious contender and most definitely knows his days and stages are numbered. Helder, Bort, Quint and Bott'i are all seasoned veterans relying on experience to try and overcome this spry field before Father Time reminds them of their mortality. It will be freshmen and sophmores like XDS, J Rod, JP'Tek, A Van B, Walkner, SamSun and Brabek battling it out against the Juniors Svitko, Jakes, G Guell and MMetge for respect in the field as we expect to see a fast pace with lots of leader changes while the first third of the race unfolds.

Rest assured Director Coma did his best to create long early stages along with difficult navigation layouts to reduce the physical advantages of the younger racers early on.

As the team strategies unfold we should start to see the the strong leaders rise to the top with Toby, Gonc, Bort and Quint positioning for dominance as the navigation difficulties start to whittle down the inexperienced.

We also have a strong field of seasoned riders in the Malle Moto class and don't be surprised to see any number of these riders breaking into the top 20 in the early stages of the race before added responsibilities take their tolls. Don't underestimate the grit and experience of this seasoned group of grisly MM vets.

That is not the usual picture of Hugo Payen and his bike, we are more used to see the bike while being "accompanied"

Interesting to see the increasing involvement of the Chinese and Indians companies.

The 2017 Zongshen Dakar effort is huge - for those not familiar, ZS are a huge company and towards the "higher end" of quality in China motorcycles. I was at ZS 9 months back doing a consulting job for one of their customers - I should have kept my eyes ( more ) open !! Thinking back, I did see a 450 Adventure model ( big panniers etc ) mock-up in their R&D dept. but they hurried me along when I asked about it.

TVS ( #4 in India with "only" 500,000 / month production ) is back, hooked up with Sherco again.

The HERO ( #1 in India ) entry is interesting, they dumped the Honda JV some years back - so what bikes are they using ? Their launch party looked VERY interesting...........

    Hero is working with Speedbrain.
Speedbrain was working with HRC from when they came back to Dakar until last year.
Before HRC they used to be the BMW/Husky Team (the pre-KTM-Husky that is now back as SWM with a huge Chinese investor).
So there are lots of options. ;-)

The entry list looks a but sad Aussie riders wise......good to see Rod F back in the saddle again.

Dave - a quick scan thru the pre-race posts tells me you're throwing your hat into the ring for 2018 - good luck to you !! I would like to help any way that I can, I would love to get over to spanner for you, but my work is just crazy at the moment and probably won't have let up by Jan 2018. Never say never though.
