@Zubb Wow, that sounds like quite the adventure.

    >Dance with the one that brung ya!

    I like that!

@Motopsychoman Can't really avoid that though coming from the West if I don't go the Sierra routes, right? Maybe I'll strap some lead to my pannier mounts :ricky

I made this route for folks coming from the city... Google Maps Link
This is the non-camping version, with an overnight stay in a Motel 6 where our bikes and gear will probably be stolen while we sleep :) There isn't more than 110 miles between gas station on this route, for folks with tiny tanks. Also goes down 25 and stays off 5 until you can't avoid it. This is all hypothetical, because I'll probably end up in a group with someone who is a million times better at planning routes than I am.

tiny tanks and riding in death valley in one sentence?

i've seen in the past xt225, 250s and even a tw200 were ridden to the noobs rally.

    i agree with zubb.

@NSFW 2.0 gallons! :( I may get something aftermarket, which would bump it up to 3.7 gallons.

I have a 2 gal gas can that fits snug with my net and rok straps, so that may be the way to do it. I also have a 1L MSR fuel bottle, which is good for like 15 miles? or so if I'm really in a pickle.

Any time of day better or worse for dealing with the wind? I am going to be riding my F800 down 395 next week.

I rode a xt250 to Noobs from Temecula a few years ago, had to borrow some gas within sight of Baker :lol3

I would definitely carry a container.

Not that I'm aware of. Check the weather forecast the day before. Wunderground gives estimated wind hour by hour. Plug in a couple of towns like Lee Vining, Bishop, Lone Pine... You should be okay on a F800, just tuck in.

I looked up the carb on your bike. It is a constant velocity CV design that is somewhat self adjusting the mixture for altitude. Don't mis understand, you will notice a loss of power but it should run ok.

The easy mixture adjusting screw you are talking about will only adjust the idle-1/4 throttle mixture. If you notice an idle speed change at altitude you might want to make a slight idle SPEED adjustment, but changing the idle MIXTURE I doubt you'd need to do.

Ridden my xt225 all over Ca, ID and Nevada, Noobs twice. Not far to Noob but almost
300 miles then another 650 at Noob then home.
SoCal to Boise and back, Coast north, then, Great Divide-15 through Vegas south. Now, there is WIND. You won't have to worry about wind on your f800.

    Izzy_C,
That 250 of yours is a fire breathing monster compared to an xt225.
That 2 ga. red thing works great but RotoPax is better for offroad and carrying gear.
Both have a great ride in.
    C U there.

@Izzy_C - I'll ride down with you or share a trailer if we can rent one from U-Haul or something. I'm on a KTM 690. I might also take the extra days and ride down with John as well.

John took me on a ride outside of Hawthorne through Lucky Pass and then up the Sonora Pass over the USMC Training CTR and I have to say, it was one of the most enjoyable trail riding i've ever done. Looking forward to much much more of this in DV.

@spafxer Ah, well that is neat, glad it will adjust a little bit. Ah, thanks, I feel like I'm always learning with carburetors :D

@heirhead Fire breathing monster? Haha, I'll take it. Yeah, a rotopax setup would be good, I just need to plop the cash down for one. That XT225 looks well ridden :)

@dbrum We could make a big group and go down with John? I know there are folks over at BARF that are for sure going with him. Yeah U-Haul has motorcycle trailers too, if you can take the days, riding would be great though.
