I really dont agree with doing it that quickly. You would really be pushing very hard and fast which its not a race track.A month or more ago myself and 3 others did a week of TAT at a reasonable speed one day we met 2 ladies on horse back in a blind bend the horses almost bolted!now we were taking it easy i would hate to see if we were hammering it along like you guys will have to be.I suppose all i'm saying is don't push it too hard because the track is for everyone. So enjoy and stay safe and so what if you don't make it once you have fun and good memories.

Checked my tracks from last year.
I was half way through AK on the 5th day.

I have no doubt this is feasible - even reasonable.
Providing however that we have good weather and no major mechanical issues.

Perhaps it would be wise for us to sacrifice a bike to the Adventure Gods prior to departure. :lol3

I think there is a misconception that we intend to be riding fast.
That is largely NOT the case.
We intend to be riding MANY hours a day at an average speed of 40 MPH.

Are you camping, mo-telling it, or sleeping in a chase veh?

    No chase vehicle.
The decision to camp or motel will be based upon where we are when we are ready to stop riding.
Our expectation is that in the East it'll be motels and in the West it'll largely be camping.
We'll probably make a point of getting to a motel every 3 days or so.

Best of luck. I believe it's possible to do in that time, with a lot of luck and endurance.
I'd don't think I'd find that pace an enjoyable experience, but everybody's different.
Riding when tired is an extra challenge on top of everything else you might encounter.

Looking forward to reading about it as it happens, if you can spare the time for a live RR?

I just read your 2016 TAT report.....most excellent and you attitude under demanding situations was exemplary. I think you took post #146 by trikepilot to heart and I am really looking forward to your big bike/small bike end of trip comparison. Like trikepilot I ran part of the eastern TAT on my 2015 DL650XT that I treat like a dirt bike. The only thing I don't like about your AT is those damn tubed rims, other than that it is a most capable TAT bike.
On your way back, try and swing through Utah and Moab. I rode out there last year and spent 10 days base camping and riding off road.....it was outstanding! Good luck on your trip and don't push it too hard to try and reach a time constraint.

Well, I AM OLD & GREY! And I think you guys will probably catch me by the time I get to Arkansas! Since I MUST be out to Port Orford and back to Gunnison by 8-31 for the KTM rally I'm probably changing my start to about 7-24 or 7-25. This will also give me time to check out the Redwoods, Sequoias and Yosemite on the way back to CO. Although I can't help but think your plan is overly optimistic, I envy your ambition! Wave when you go by!

    What are you riding?
I'm signed up for the KTM Rally - but I'm trailering back out after I get back from this ride.
Was there two years ago and did the first day on my Ducati Multistrada - that got some looks :scratch
Planning on doing both days this year on a yet-to-be-acquired Ducati Desert Sled.

    Thanks!
Downloaded and imported into Google Maps so I can compare the satellite view with the route I mapped to see which has less pavement.

some post back you mentioned front tires......IMHO..I found the Dunlop 606's has better grip than than TKC 80's in loose stuff. The MT21 is preffered but won't last near as long and not a good choice for a heavier bike with the time considered...

It appears the road is still out between Ketchum, ID and Featherville, ID.
    I've reworked trikepilot's re-route to avoid pavement.

Looks like a toss-up to me on the ratio of dirt to pavement

Replaced paper filters with BMC reusable filters.

And while I had the mid cowel off, used some JB Plastic Weld to repair some damage from a low slide ending against a tree stump.

The crash bars were largely totaled in that low side so those came off and are being replaced with AltRider bars.
