As PukaWai and Guoseph mentioned in their reports, Wednesday night at the hot springs was anything but calm. Wind blew all night long, kicking up dust that covered everything in my tent. Sleep was sporadic. If I hadn't been tired from the long ride, I don't think I would've slept at all. Around 5am, during a relative lull, I crawled to take care of some morning business. Sky held patchy clouds, with lots of stars showing. I hoped that was a good sign.

Seconds after crawling back into my tent, we were hit by two tremendous gusts... Wham! WHAM! Heard a 'snap' at the second one and my tent folded over on top of me. (Turned out to be a broken pole.) I sat up with my back to the wind, trying to hold everything in place, and called out to Glen who was camped nearby. He responded that his tent was also partly down, but holding together.

I sat there for what felt like an hour, but was probably only a few minutes. Wind wasn't letting up, so I started throwing all of my things into stuff sacks so I could kick them out without them blowing away. Then, at the first respite, I jumped out, scooped up my tent (with mattress, sleeping bag, and other stuff inside), and ran off to the restroom (the only solid shelter around). Dropped my bundle in the peaceful concrete vault, then went back to collect my other gear. Finally, rolled my bike over to the leeward side of the building and set about packing everything up proper.

All done and found that I was getting hungry, so grabbed my pack and headed over to the springs to find a calm place (other than the toilet) to eat my breakfast. Also ended up soaking for another hour or so (that's why we're here, right?) with some other folks who were roused early by the wind (which never really let up the whole time).

Eventually wandered back towards camp and found that the whole moto crew now 'occupied' the restroom, turning it into the local Starbucks (somewhere there are pictures :nod). South Pass didn't look to bad at this time, so Glen and I made plans to depart, while others debated waiting for better conditions. Guoseph and Pukawai actually set out first, figuring that we would be along later in case they ran into any trouble.

I think it was around 9am when we set off across the valley... leaning into the wind.

Crazy crosswind with stinging sand from the dunes.

Left turn on Saline Valley Rd and I could sometimes barely pull 6th gear into the headwind.

Stop for a breather at the new Salt Tram info board. On a clear day, you can see the springs from here.

Caught up with Guoseph at the Lippencott junction and we sorta teamed up for the ride back to camp. By that I mean, Glen's 690 would effortlessly punch a hole thru the wind and roost ahead, while the 500's just did their best.
(We never did catch up with Pukawai, who was travelling super heavy, but apparently also very steady :thumb)

Up in the clouds over the pass. Sometimes couldn't see past your front fender. (Video link if it works...)

Out of the clouds and regrouping at Lee Flat.

    Chasing Guoseph :pynd
    [IMG]

Made it back to PSR around 11am and just crashed out for awhile (luckily, the tent I had left by my truck was still standing :knary)

    ~70 miles for the day.

Spent the afternoon just relaxing and connecting with friends who had arrived during the day :wave

Nice sunset looking south down the valley from camp.

Finished off the evening in the best way possible... hangin' out on the patio at PSR :beer

    Friday (3/23)

Didn't have any specific plans to even ride on friday. Just figured to hang around, relax, and maybe help Joel with anything that needed helping.

Ended up spending the first half of the day working on other peoples bikes (not the first time). In this case, it was an old friend DSM8 (Dave), who had shown up with a very poorly running bike (again, not the first time :rolleyes).

Dave 'claimed' the bike (525EXC, same as mine) was running fine just a week before, but now it would barely start, wouldn't idle, popped and sputtered with throttle. Everything checked out fine on the outside, so we pulled the carb and disassembled everything for a thorough cleaning. Found crusty green crud in the float bowl and around the jets. Bad / old gas? Cleared the jets and blew out all the passages (Thanks for the carb cleaner Gerg :deal), put it back together, and fingers crossed.

Much to Dave's dismay, the bike fired right up and ran great (of course). Guess we'll hafta go for a ride :nod

Suited up after lunch and headed up the old Toll Road towards Darwin.

A loner on another RFS joined us for a bit. Never did catch his name :dunno

Couple vids of the worst section of the road.

    First Dave...

    ... and then the loner.

Dave and I continued up the canyon, while the loner went to check out China Garden.

Beyond Darwin, heading towards Centennial Flat.

I tricked Dave into following the burro trail I had found a few days before... He said it was very relaxing.

Maybe not so much this part :augie
    [IMG]

    :finger
    [IMG]

Dave basically hasn't ridden off-road in like forever and was sounding a little winded, so time to head back towards camp.

Cruising on back to Darwin :ricky
    [IMG]

    :wave
    [IMG]

Always amazing colors in this canyon :thumb
    [IMG]

One last time through the rocks.

Must've gone into full relax mode back at camp because I had no more pics for the rest of the day :dunno

It's all good :beer :dukegirl :kumbaya :freaky :snore

    ~40 miles for the day.

I didn't try that but they did work with me pretty well when I realized I hadn't redeemed mine in time. I was a couple months past the expiry date but figured I'd call them anyway and they said "Yeah man, no problem!" I had put off redemption because the KLR was broken. End of story I got just the stabilizer itself, no brackets, etc. That's the money part and they gladly gave me that, when I put it on I'll just buy the much cheaper brackets from them at the time. When the KLR rides again it won't be with those shitty factory bars so I have *no idea* what brackets I need yet ;)

Ha, I have a friend like that. Every time she shows up at a Jeep event I end up fixing something on her Jeep. Usually it's some off the wall issue that nobody she'd taken it to could figure it out (not that I'm saying I'm all that, just that her support circle isn't!). Hell half the time it requires an oddball tool that I just happen to have on me for an inexplicable reason.

    Hey Dave,
Thanks so much for the track. I can't figure out if there's a way to extract the track from the Google map. Worst case scenario I can recreate in Basecamp. I almost joined another group (Larry's group) at Ballarat on Saturday afternoon to do Pleasant Canyon but looked down to find a flat front tire. Limped back to PSR at that point.
    Thanks again,
    Dave
