sunday came and thought i can relax finally...but gimpy was by himself to retrieve the repeater. how difficult could it be, we're on a jeep that can crawl to the top of the world. little that i know. anyway, glad we sucked in rider914.

    wohoo....we're on saline valley road
    [IMG]

this rider from the tour group almost became a hood ornament. good thing gimpy anticipated that he'll panic and so we stopped.

it may looked like we're 100 yards from the road but actually more like 1/4 mile with all the trail searching and zig-zagging
    [IMG]

i think these guys were mountain goats before god turned them to humans
    [IMG]

according to geoff's waypoint, this is the location
    [IMG]

the view is the only thing worthwhile doing this hike. that's the turnoff to hunter mountain road
    [IMG]

    panoramic view
    [IMG]

carrying the repeater down from the hill was a chore. the metal box alone and battery must have weighed 100 lbs.....:knary the sob, built like it will withstand a nuclear blast. damn, the :pynd:pyndwho volunteer next year to take it up and bring it down....i will be very happy to provide 3 nights of free dinner...:deal

gimpy made it down, way ahead of us and patiently waiting below.

i fully and finally realized how tough to set up and take down the repeater, and really grateful to geoff and to all who helped.

lots of work for sure, but nevertheless the radio saved at least 2 riders in the past from spending the night on the trail. besides, we all need to go back to old school when smart phones are worthless in the desert.

    WE ARE DONE WITH THEM!

those with Scotts Vouchers......if you already have one and don't need it...someone could be able to use it. if you don't have one and will be doing a lot of riding, go and get one. you'll be happy to have it on your bike.

what? for someone with retirement plans, you will need to get a brand new bike and use that voucher.

marty, thanks for wanting to pass it along and all the volunteered labor you put in during the rally.

Sherry and I had a great time at this years rally. Thank you Joel and all the volunteers who make this rally so great for noobs and old timers alike.

Sherry and I spent the first 4 nights dispersed camping in the van and 4-wheeling during the day.

Saturday night camp at Trona Pinnacles.

Dropped the bike off at PSR and drove up Goler Wash to Barker Ranch.

Sunday night camp at mouth of Goler Wash.

On Monday we explored Cottonwood Canyon and camped at its mouth.

On Tuesday we checked out Darwin Falls, China Gardens and the town of Darwin before driving up into the hills west of Darwin and making our last remote camp.

On Wednesday, we drove up to Hunter Mountain to check out conditions and then made our way to Panamint Springs Resort for the Noobs Rally.

On Thursday afternoon, I led a ride to China Gardens, Darwin and the hills beyond. I think I was joined by Mike (@MoikonaBoik ), Paul and Vlad (@baerrus ).

Friday, I lead a ride to Ballerat, Goler Wash, Barker Ranch and Mengel Pass. Riders were Mike, Paul, Vlad, Bill (@Speed Racer ), Buck (@squr3l ), Patrick, Joe and Matt (?). This was definitely a pushy ride for Vlad who took a few spills.

Finally on Saturday, I led a ride to Hunter Mountain, Teakettle Jct, Racetrack and Lippencott Rd. Riders were Mike, Paul, Bill, Buck and Patrick.

Here's a few pics from Saturday's ride. Thanks to Mike for letting me post some of his photos.

So after more digging into it would you believe the bike is pretty much just fine?

Here you see my Plastigage showing that all the camshaft journal oil clearances are in spec! I couldn't believe it when I popped the cylinder head cover off and saw fairly neat looking journals with normal wear, I was expecting garbage!

End result the three machine screws that hold the outer oil pump on partially rattled out causing the pumped oil to spill out of the side back into the case. I still ran it with zero oil pressure (albeit conservatively once I realized it was running hot for no good reason) and it seems the only damage I got was two more stripped out cylinder head cover bolts (likely caused by the elevated temperatures, they're already fixed).

So it looks like I'm a couple-few hundred dollars away from riding again. Man those OEM parts stack up.

Oh yeah, I was also thoroughly unsurprised to see that the clutch was just out of spec, it'll get a new clutch, too.
