Is Scotts giving discounts to noob attendees? I actually am thinking about getting two steering dampers, so if anyone has a code I would be stoked!

Thanks I got it sorted. Ordered a Seat Concepts seat for a bike I don’t have yet! Optimism... I have two of their seats now.

    I did thank Karma Tequila.

    Friday (3/29)

After getting back from the springs on thursday and getting settled in at camp, I went over to Rally central, signed in, and added a ride on the white board. This was supposed to be a Friday morning practice session and afternoon trail ride. Unfortunately, I kinda screwed up and forgot to include the day. Got that corrected some hours later, and by late thursday night there were a few names (all unfamiliar) on the list.

Up before sunrise friday morning... super nice!

    Camp was properly full :nod
    [IMG]

Made a point to have breakfast, get suited up, and be ready to go at the appointed time (9am).
Sure enough, folks started showing up to introduce themselves right on schedule.

    We ended up with @trumpet900 (500EXC), @sumwon (KLR650), @michaelbrux (TE630), @Mak10 (SuperTenere), and @DSM8 (525EXC) in as sweep.
(Sorry for taking so long to put this together guys :hide)

I will admit I was a little nervous about Mak10 on the big Yamaha, but that turned out to be totally unfounded :clap

Spent a little time describing some options - where we could go and what to expect - letting the group decide what was best.

Nobody was really a Nooby-Noob and everyone had some experience, so we agreed to skip the morning practice and just get on with the ride.

Off we go to the Old Toll Road.

I had DSM8 lead 'til the Darwin Falls parking area (so I could get a sense of the cats in the herd), then took point as we headed up

The Old Toll Road is generally pretty easy and well traveled, but there is one spot that always seems to be a bit nasty. A medium climb covered with loose rocks and a few lumpy steps carved out by the 4-wheeled crowd. Really not that difficult with some balance and a little momentum (not neccessarily speed), but it doesn't help that this section is just around a blind corner. I think the surprise is what often catches the inexperienced.

Knowing what was ahead, I stopped to give the Noobs a warning of what was just around the bend.

    trumpet900 and Mak10 arrive
    [IMG]

    Followed by sumwon and michaelbrux
    [IMG]

After a quick briefing, I rode ahead and parked above the obstacle.
(Sorry, I didn't get any pics of trumpet900 or michaelbrux :hide)

Mak10 rumbled up like a boss :thumb
    [IMG]

... but sumwon was having some trouble.

Some folks will expend a ton of energy pushing and shoving, burning up clutches and knobs, grinding their way up a climb like this :baldy

I say it is much easier to just ride up it cleanly, so we backed the KLR down to some hard pack, gave (KLR) some words of encouragement (and a chance to catch his breath), and told him to takeanother shot.

    :clap
    [IMG]
(See, I told ya it was easy :nod)

Of course, now we had to hike back up to our bikes :knary
    [IMG]
(Thanks for the dust Dave :wave)

The rest of the climb is pretty mild, then over the top, and down a canyon.

About time for a short break, so I steered the group down to China Garden.

(Stole the above pic from DSM8. Totally failed to take any of my own since I had just been here a few days before.)

Everyone rested and raring to go, we motored back up the canyon towards Darwin.

We pulled into Darwin and stopped at Hal's Stone Circle for another short break.
(Again, totally failed to take any of my own since I had just been here.)

Stole these couple pics from DSM8. Did anyone else take some? :ear
    [IMG]

Honestly didn't have any clear plan on where to go after Darwin. Lots of options in the area from easy to hard.
Wasn't sure what the group would be up for, so I let them decide and we set our sites on Hunter Mtn.

Thanks for the ride report @rider914. I realized later in the day that on the sign up sheet it said <700 sized bikes.

I could almost hear your back crying out, thinking about having to pick up the Tenere. :muutt

I had a couple of guys camped next to me that said the toll road was moderately challenging. It sounded like a fun route to take over to Darwin to see the sites.

It was as a really fun ride. All riders were great.

The next day was a two up tour of Death Valley covering the sites my wife wanted to see, Stovepipe Wells, Devils golf course, Artist palate, Furnace Creek, Badwater Basin, Dante’s View, and back. 220 miles. The Super Tenere was fantastic both in the dirt and munching pavement two up. :pynd

we have a group of 14 (less #13). bunch of cool guys. no rogue rider.....:D

in the future, wish we could have more ride leaders stepping up.

thanks to these guys and others for helping out. DSM8, Garfey and the rider ? who trucked the damaged bike back to DJSponge's home - you guys are great assets to the noobs rally and to the community. according to DJS, he wasn't doing anything crazy, he got caught in a rut and next thing he knew, he's down. it happened so fast. does anyone has a picture of DJS while lying on the ground?....:lol3 j/k

prior to SATURDAY dinner, Robert of SEAT CONCEPTS talked technical about seats. no sales talk but purely explaining the benefit of having a proper seat. not just for comfort, but the ergo and having the correct body geometry, arms, and leg positions. that was a good presentation.....:thumb
