    Perfect spot for lunch.

Back in town we stop to do some shopping, then it's time to pack things up for a 5am departure for home.

Like I said at the beginning, this will go down as one of the coolest trips I've taken. Watching Tristan experience adventure travel for the first time was priceless. Kudos again to Wynette for being willing to ride, she got really frustrated with bike drops (it's hard being short) but we couldn't have done this trip otherwise. We were very blessed to have a safe trip, great weather, and no mechanical issues ... except a smoked wheel bearing on the Glenwood Canyon viaduct on I70. I had spares... :-)

    [IMG] ... [IMG]

This trip is why I really got going on these ride reports, Tristan can read it years from now and remember the trip.

Mid-Atlantic Backcountry Discovery Route - May 25 to June 2

The BDR folks have given us another gift with the Mid-Atlantic BDR. Running from Damascus, VA to the PA/NY state line, I describe it to non-motorcycle friends as a motorcycle version of the Appalachian Trail.

Between school ending for Wynette and June/July hay consuming my life we have a week to do something. ADV research suggests we'd be OK 2-up on the MABDR so off we go. Last day of school was Friday, at 8am Sat we're rolling for Abingdon, VA. I built a 315 mile route ahead of time that takes us directly there on 2 lane roads.

First day of riding was a lot of this...

The Alpine Hotel in Abingdon is a nice little place, we check in and head across the street to Cracker Barrel for dinner.

Sunday May 26th - Abingdon to Mountain Lake Lodge - 156 miles

The Snake is a tasty piece of road just south of the MABDR. Thanks to Cannonshot's ride report for sharing this info and tracks.

Tasty indeed ... and early Sunday morning we have the road to ourselves.

Mountain Lake Lodge was the filming location of Dirty Dancing, in the movie it was called Kellerman's Mountain House. 30 years later they're still trading on this fame. The BDR runs right in front of it so this was an obvious overnight that Wynette would like. It's a cool place, kind of a throwback to the early 1900's, but it's expensive and has no air conditioning or TVs in the rooms. Unless your significant other is with you it wouldn't be worth it to me.

Plus the all the water in the lake went down the drain, Appalacian karst topography for ya.

Btw, what camera did you use in UT?

Yep, loss of the lake hasn't done the place any favors. I feel bad for them.

All trips the last several years I'm carrying a Sony A7Rii/24-70 2.8 and a Sirui tripod. Wynette is using my well-worn first gen RX100 point and shoot.

As DCrider mentioned the lake you see in the movie sprang an underground leak and emptied overnight. Actually it has happened several times over recorded history. Eventually the leak plugs itself and the lake returns. When the gazebo below was built it extended into the lake.

The BDR route runs almost to the front door of the lodge so it's easy to get back on track.

Tub Run Rd. We had 2 near-miss head on collisions with other bikes that were in our track on blind corners. One a 2-up GS, one 690. If I would have been carrying the speed they were we would have hit. I always ride expecting it to happen but it shook Wynnette up.

Not many options for dinner in this area though - we went down the road to the Waterwheel Restaurant.

Tuesday May 28 - Warm Springs, VA to Petersburg WV - 155 miles

Today's route runs through Highland County, VA which is an interesting place. Nicknamed "Virginia's Switzerland" it's one of the least populated counties, and has one of the highest average elevations east of the Mississippi. We stopped for lunch at the gas station near McDowell and were told the entire county has about 2000 residents, the school system has 200 students in 2 buildings (0-5th, 6-12th). Her daughter was a graduating class of 8. That's for a whole county. In Virginia. Today's ride definitely felt remote with almost no traffic.

This house in McDowell was Stonewall Jackson's headquarters during the Battle of McDowell...

so they named the grocery store across the street after him.

What an impressive collection of images! I would enjoy any of those adventures. You're very fortunate to have a family that enjoys this common interest.

It's about 4pm, so we unpack the bike and head for Antietam. Neither of us have been to Antietam, Harper's Ferry, or Gettysburg, these stops are a great bonus to the BDR.
