Rich Henrion and I will be doing an IBA All Yooperland SS1K that will start & end in Iron Mountain, Michigan, starting on June 22th. This is an IBA SS1K ( >1,000 miles done in < 24 hours ) done all in the beautiful Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

The route is slightly different than the route that was done in 2017.

    2019 All Yooperland.jpg

Everyone is welcome to do this ride on June 22nd. All types of bikes, trikes, Spyders, and even Slingshots are welcome.

If you do the ride, as a courtesy to you, the IBA has OK'd me to handle the paperwork for you. No logs for you to fill out and you will receive your IBA Certificate much quicker, too.

Check out the details at : All Yooperland SS1K

For those who can make it, there will be a Rider's Dinner on Friday and a Rider's meeting after the dinner. There will also be a mandatory Rider's meeting Saturday morning @ 6:10 am before the ride starts at 6:30 am. But this is not a big group ride. Form you own group, ride with Rich & I , or do the ride solo. It's your ride !

If you re-visit the above link, then hit your Reload or Restore button to see the latest changes.

If you do not already have your IBA number, go to the Iron Butt Association to learn more about the IBA.

Awesome Jim, thanks for organizing this. I'm not sure if I can make it, that weekend already had something on the calendar, but the better half sounded receptive to letting me skip those soft commitments for this event.

I know, cue Admiral Ackbar, but I'm going with it for now.

I have to ponder on that for a bit
it will either be a 1241 cc four cylinder or a 124.9 cc one cylinder

That gives you quite a range to deal with.

Well that didn’t take long. My son just got his vacation approved for last week of June first week of July. He wants to bike Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana. I guess I will accompany him. I am out for the UP ride. There’s always next year Jim!

This looks like an interesting ride. How long do you think it would take to finish this one?

If I'm not in Idaho at that time I'll be there.

Take a look at the Turn-by-Turn PDF at the ride webpage. Most Riders should be able to finish before 3:30 am. In 2017 Rich Henrion and 4 other Riders finished at around 1:45 am. They made quick stops, but Rich did ordered burgers while on the road from Hoppy's in Kenton, so they spent some time stopped there.

The PDF is conservative, but probably a good guide for a first time IBA Rider. And the speed limit is now 65 mph on a lot of the two-lanes in the U.P.

Thanks Jim. This will be my first try at an iron butt ride. I have wanted to do one of your rides for the last few years but it just has not worked out yet.

John : It should be a fun ride. And almost everyone that starts, finishes. I have had a few Riders that didn't because of a mechanical or electrical problem, or some other reason outside their control. You will definitely get to see a lot of the U.P.

If you would like to ride with Rich & I , you are welcome. I may not be able to keep up with Rich during the entire ride, but I'll try. Late in the ride, I may need to take a 20 minute rest, maybe in St. Ignace or Manistique on the way back to Iron Mountain. And after midnight I may have a Monster non-sugar energy drink.

Jim - Do you know if the road between Gay and Bete Grise in the Keweenaw has been repaired in the last couple years? (Back in 2016, when I took a run up there, parts of that stretch were downright dangerous the way the old stamp-sand pavement was crumbling.) 20160618_180347.jpeg

Not Jim but last August - September they were working hot and heavy on that road (Gay - Lac La Belle Rd). I left for Florida before I could see if it was finished or not. My summer place is about 30 minutes from there.

    That's good news !!

There is an alternative route to Copper Harbor from Gay, but it's not as scenic as the ride along the east side of the Keweenaw peninsula. And you would miss seeing Lac Labelle and Mt. Bohemia.

The SD card, is that something that will work with a smart phone, or must we bring a normal camera?

I don`t know what I did wrong in my above post in that it included the whole ride post? Anyway, to be clear I am wondering about the SD card requirement. I am not tech savvy, so is it a card you can use with a smart phone or a regular digital camera?
