Hmm tempting. I'll be back from the Vic Highcountry just earlier that week. I'll let a few local Northlanders know as there's a QBW ride the wknd b4...
Interested. Need to see if dates work with kids etc.
Sounds great. Might pull the wr450 from the semi retired commuter lifestyle for a gravel blast.
I've suggested to a few friends from Auckland/North Harbour Ulysses that we join you on this great ride. Three are keen so far, will probably be five or six of us. We're all on adventure bikes (VStrom 650 in my case), have done quite a bit of gravel and some beaches, but are probably in the beginner/intermediate skill level compared to most of the people here.
I wouldn't let skill level bother you at all. Most are happy to help out in a sticky situation. Om rubbish at but seem to muddle through.
It's a bit far South for me, but I can't think of an excuse to stay home. See you on Saturday morning.
Checking how far my EXC runs on a tank of gas...
Dave 'the mobile chicane' Whangarei
Hi guys I'm keen to join too. I've booked a room for sat night. Live in whangarei so I'll meet at wellsford sat mornin. Ride a vstrom 1000 poorly.
For you northland guys, the first gravel section will be at Mountain road in Maungatoroto so we can meet you all there on the way and save you some time and 50 km`s of tarmac riding.
I can send out some route instructions or GPS files closer to the time for anyone who wants them.
"Turn left at Mountain Road. Follow for 8kms."
done that a few times.
I came through Omana, Pikowahine, Ararua Valley, Porters, Paparoa Station, Golden Stairs last weekend and the boys have put a fair bit of fine brown metal over parts of the roads. Some of it was in loose drifts. Depending on yiur skill level thats either great or not great needless to say i was being cautious. It might have all blended in by now but just in case!!
New to the forum and keen to have a ride. Do I need to register with someone for this or just turn up and hope I find you?
Hi. New here too. Would love to do this ride. Booked a room at the Wellsford Inn. Will be travelling from the South Island. Planning to go through Martinborough to Riversdale beach. Does anyone know whether there is a road from Summerhill to Rocky Hill road? Any farms I can ask permission to cross? Thanks very much for organizing this trip.
Hi Ohuraboy, there is nowhere to register. If you are staying at the pub on Friday night we will catch up there over a beer.
If not staying, we will be leaving from the Mobil service station in the main street of Wellsford at 8.00 am Saturday morning.
I am keen to go as this is an awesome ride. Did most of it with my son last year.
Just booked the hotel.
Please post any news or changes if any.
Looking forward to it!!!!
Wow 5 years since the last one. My poor old r80 is now 35 but still going. Might tag along at the back.
Breaking news from last week, Rally NZ back in the world championship for 2020.
NZ has not had a round of the WRC since 2012
So these great roads we get to ride on the Saturday will once again become `World Famous In NZ` special stages.
Don't know if I should cheer or feel sorry about it....at most times I wish it could all be locked away for only a few to see rather than being plastered all over the world's billboards.
There just aren't many places left in this world that haven't been trampled into the dust by the ignorant commercial hordes.
Looks like a good ride planned.
I'll be coming mate.
