Hello all - planning on doing a loop like this starting approximately May 1 ending up around Portland mid-June and then back in CA sometime after that.

Hardware is a 2008 530 EXCR I took on the TAT a couple summers ago with a big tank. Going to go light and stay in hotels mostly. I like this bike offroad; it'll go anywhere. I've done quite a bit of work on it replacing wheel bearings, counter shaft, brakes and rotors, and the valves. I'm going to have the suspension rebuilt before I do this trip so I think the bike should be in pretty good shape.

Routes and gps tracks i'm taking from:

    https://ridebdr.com/
    http://www.oohva.org/

If anyone has locations for tracks for northern california, those would be much appreciated!

Planning to keep a pace around 100-150 miles a day, riding 5-6 days a week -- leisurely pace.

Any advice welcome! I'll start a thread in ride reports once I'm on my way.

Rough current plan - will have to trim some if we’re hold up for awhile...

Some more info on the bike - I took this bike on part of the TAT in 2018, had a failure at the end of that trip that caused a countershaft replacement in the engine - and I've recently redone the suspension and some other small items in prep for the BDR.

So, still not away - latest plan is maybe going north instead of south - death valley and the southern border are gonna be pretty hot. So thinking No Cal, OR, WA, then ID, UT south - then I have a friend in UT, so maybe leave the bike there and do the southern part, UT, AZ, So. CA in the fall.

Bike is pretty much ready - just need to do a quick valve check and put the bags back on the bike.

So, got away and had a great time on the first leg to Salt Lake City -- taking a break for it to cool off for the south leg - Utah, Arizona, Southern California.

The bike is pretty tired - engine using oil, needs a top-end piston and rings -- one of the front fork seals is blown. I think I'm going to trade up for a new bike in SLC.

Well the trip is complete! 8k miles, ~230 hours, two bikes, two months, a lot of great country and weather and food.

Happy to answer any questions anyone has on doing something like this - it's not hard, just takes a lot of time.

Looks like an interesting loop and you got creative stringing it all together. Did you have a cush hub for the 530?

No cush hub for the 530 - I had the engine apart in 2018 to replace a worn counter-shaft and thought about it, but being mostly dirt use, I decided not to spend that money.
