According to our sources, the Dakar in 2021 will be new in Saudi Arabia. The course changes will be seen from 2022, where the competition should start in Saudi Arabia, pass through Oman and end in the United Arab Emirates.

Hi y'all good F5 DAKAR-ista folk of the ADVRider.com RACING forum rally faithfull... :wave

It's been an odd year this past 2020... what with the global COVID-19 epidemic, just about every aspect of society... our work... family... political and social lives have gone through radical changes... not to mention sport.

Since DAKAR in January, there has only been the one FIA/FIM Cross Country Rallye fixture of note this year - The Andalucia Rally - and not surprisingly, the amount of "rallye raid" vibe here on the ADVRider.com RACING forum - has been sparse.

But in the last week or so, the DAKAR news has begun to bubble again in here on "the Bivouac" thread... it is December now after all :D

... and so for that reason... I have dug up and stickied THIS 2021 DAKAR F5 rumours thread that @Myway started for us back in February... and encourage all of us to fill it with content and discussion about the upcoming Saudi DAKAR...

The BIVOUAC thread will remain for general rally new and discussion... but any items of interest specifically related to the upcoming 2021 edition of DAKAR, would be great to discuss them here the F5 pre-DAKAR thread...

    cheers! :beer

Lots of new rules this time around in an effort to increase safety. Most seem reasonable, a few seem odd. No working on your bike at fuel stops? 6 rear tires for the entire race, my spidey senses see mustaches everywhere. 90 km/h speed limits on the specials in pre determined places makes me raise an eyebrow...its racing for goodness sakes. More nav = good is my books.

Will be interesting to see how it all works out.

Big fan of the rb 20 min before the race. Digital this year...couldnt tell if is mandatory or an option.

Surprised at the large turnout given the whole covid thing.

Hmmm . . . A couple of weeks ago, on Jimmy Lewis's Tech Talk Taco Tuesday #83 (at ~t=40), Ricky Brabec said (he thought) there'd be paper roadbook for Dakar 2021 but electronic roadbooks for the World Championship events thereafter.

That conversation starts at the 40 minute mark.
Can you imagine the opportunities for technical difficulties.

How about a big salty "dry" lake crossing next to Asuwayriqyah to mess with electronics on the last day?

Like the Salar D'Uyuni in 2015...? :deal

:hmmmmm ... surely the ASO would not make that misstake again...? :dunno

What is the chance of rain in Saudi Arabia in January...? I guess is the key question... :D

    Good morning :sip

The logistics (and expense) to line up this year must be something else. I’ve been too worried with real life to be observant* has the Le Havre shipment happened?

*Very recently escaped that real life worry with another awesome French event that produces F5rehose quantities of information, drama and heroic deeds, any of you following the Vendee Globe?

    ^^^ :eek7

    in other words... 81% Mattighofen.

it is easy to look at KTM's almost total dominance of the moto category at DAKAR/in Rallye Raid since the modern era (@ post 2000) and think... wow, the orange factory owns it.

On the other hand, it is fair to ponder the question "would there even be a moto category" if KTM was not currently involved...? Or would there just be more privateer Honda, Yamaha (and perhaps Suzuki and Kawasaki) 450 based machines on the start list?

When you look at those numbers... it is interesting to speculate just how much "influence" Mattighofen has with the ASO... :augie

Interesting to note also, that since the move back from South America to Saudi, that France and Spain are - once more - the main contributors as far as entry numbers... 40% of the field.

Or was the 450cc engine restriction purpose built for KTM? BMW and Honda both used 650s and BMW dropped out of the Dakar afterwards.

KTM had been competing at DAKAR (and winning often) with the LC4 single cylinder engine in various configurations of 620cc to 700cc for over 15 years when the 450cc capacity limit was introduced in 2011. To the contrary - many at the time thought that the 450cc limit was an attempt to end KTM's domination...

HONDA and YAMAHA have met the challenge... but the other factories (aside from BMW Speedbrain, Aprilia and Sherco briefly) have not mounted any great factory effort since.
