After a bit of a hiatus the SoCal Roadbook Rally is back!

    Dates: Oct 20 - 24

Location: Cantil, California 25 miles N of Mojave, CA

    1200 km of Roadbook!

This is not an organized event, just like minded people that wanna ride road-books & camp out in the desert.

Four days of friendly, but challenging road-book routes to ride at your own pace. Great for first timers and experts alike. Street legal Dirt bike required.

I will provide the road-book, you ride them. Ride during the day and shoot the shit by the campfire at night. Several solid HP sections included.

Rough Camping, there are zero facilities at the sight so you will need to bring everything you need to eat, drink, sleep, ride in the desert for four days. The new location will have toilette pits.

Rally Navigation Noobs: If you've never tried Rally Nav this is the event for you. Come out and give it a try with minimal commitment and cost and see if you like it. Instruction will be provided.

For a feel of what the events are like have a look at past editions:

    2016 Socal Roadbook Rally

*** Skip to the end of the threads for the ride report portion.

    Schedule:

    - Wed, Oct 20:

Afternoon arrival at camp, get set up and get ready for 4 solid days of riding.
Navigation class for the Rally noobs that want to learn how it's done.
There will be a short (30 +/- km) calibration loop available for people that want to test out their equipment and make sure everything is working fine.

    - Thurs, Oct 21: JoBurg Loop (NOT big bike friendly)

    Distance: 172 miles / 277 km
    Fuel Range: 94 miles / 151 km

    - Fri, Oct 22: Trona Loop (bigger bike doable)

    Distance: 197 miles / 317 km
    Fuel Range: 108 miles / 174 km

    - Sat, Oct 23: Hinkley Loop

    Distance: 207 miles / 338 km
    Fuel Range: 93 miles / 163 km

    - Sun, Oct 24: El Paso Loop

    Distance: 137 miles / 221 km
    Fuel Range: 137 miles / 221 km

** All roadbooks will be in Kilometers as per tradition.

    Fuel Range: 137 miles / 221km

Factor in + 20% fuel for getting lost and back tracking.
If 137 miles is too much for some, I can rework the fuel gap and drop range to 110.

    FAQ:

This is an unofficial get together. Dry camping w/ zero facilities in the desert. You will need to bring food, water and fuel for four + days.

Road-books will be available in Rally (6") or Enduro (3") size or .PDF for the digital users.
I will e-mail you the road-books in .pdf format a week prior to the event so you can print them out and tape them together.

450-500cc bike is best, but doable on a larger bike if you are an expert rider, you'll just have to work much harder.

Intermediate riders and above. This is the desert after all. There will be whoops, sand, rocks, ruts, ledges and washes.

NO UTVs or Quadtards, bikes only.

Fuel: Bring a 5 gal fuel can so you can top off at night before the next day's loop.

    Environmentals:

    Sunrise: 7:05 AM
    Sunset : 6.10 PM

    Day-length: 11 hrs 05min

Average Temps: 75F High / 45 F Low. Highs can get in the mid to upper 80s that time of year.

    Equipment:

    - Roadbook Holder (Mechanical or digital)
    - Odometer in Km
    - Cap Repeater ( Nice to have but you can get away with a compass)
    - Satellite Tracking device. I will set up Spotwalla or Spot Buddy to track riders.
    - GPS. No tracks will be provided to make Nav more challenging. The GPS is just so you can find your way home when you are helplessly lost.

    Mason Klein Dakar 2021

One of our very own local racers Mason Klein just got his acceptance letter for the 2021 Dakar Rally.

The 2020 SoCal Roadbook Rally is now an official fund raising event for this promising young rider. He has the potential to be the youngest racer to ever complete the Dakar Rally.

RMS (Rally Moto Shop) who is a sponsor of this event and of Mason Klein is generously donating prizes in support of this Dakar effort. They are also donating a few select pieces of rally equipment that will be auctioned off to the highest bidder.

Additionally, Mason's family will host a BBQ for all the riders on one of the nights we are in camp.

    More details to follow.

Can't wait to see this guy cross the finish line.

Mason will be at the event ripping through road-books with the rest of us.

    ADMIN NOTES:

1- I need a couple of sweepers, so if you just want to just ride some trail and hang out, let me know. I'll hook you up w/ the GPS tracks.

2- Also, If you cannot make the event, but want to ride the routes for fun or training, hit me up. I would love to have someone pre-run the roadbooks and make sure they are 100% dialed in for the event.

3- If you've never tried Roadbook Navigation this is the type of event you want to start off with. I can provide an intro to Rally Navigation for anyone who has never done it before.

4- Registration is now open, see bottom of post #1 for Link.

5- If you have spare room when you come out please bring some firewood.
We'll need plenty for 4 nights around the campfire.

    Fantastic!

Thanks for putting the roadbooks together. Looking forward to a trip to sunny SoCal for a break from the PN Wet in November.

Ooooooooh!!!!! Parked next to Bob Gordon's "Betsy"!! I got to co-drive with Butch Arciero and Ryan Arciero in that car when the team won twice.

Here is Butch and I at the start in Mexicalli:

Is there a limit to how many “like minded riders” can show up for this non-event?

Not really. If it gets crowded I'd split the group in half and send them out on 2 different routes, then switch the next day.

I’ll see if i can make it. Rally events in the US are few and far between, so the 1000 mile drive to Mojave doesn't sound too bad.

That's why I decided to make it a 4 day event: To make it worthwhile for people coming from further out. Plus no one is required to ride all 4 days, just ride what you feel like.

Cheers to that! Then there’s the LAB2V ride at the end of November, so I’ll have to turn right back around just a few weeks later back to Mojave. Ahh, the sacrifices we make for epic riding!

    Thanks Dan!

Super stoked for this rally 'non' event. We are lucky to have a great rally community + epic places to explore in the western US.

I may be able to help pre run and I'll also volunteer to ride sweep for one of the days (on my bike or in my truck)

    You doin' Sonora this year?

    Stay in touch,
    Mike

Love seeing more roadbook opportunities like this! Keeping an eye on this but can't commit until I know how much vacation I use up getting to Sonora and back. Living in Indiana is a real bummer for rally.
