Is the 276 series Garmin set up with the latest reception abilities? I had an old Garmin that couldn't find its way out of a city if there were any two story buildings.

the 276c has been discontinued for quite a while (maybe 3 years?). however many people do still like them and the resell value on them is still high.

I have one and really like it but was considering a Monterra because the receiver is a lot more sensitive (GPS and GLONASS). I haven't had too many issues with my 276 but after riding a few weekends ago with two friends, one had the Montana one the Monterra, they definitely get better reception in the woods than I did. having the unit with the antenna fixed straight up (rubber band) helped a lot but still not as good as theirs.
