I just got back from a 3 day 770 mile solo ride from my home in echo park LA CA. to josh tree, Salton sea, glames dunes, pochico, Yuma and back. This is the the report.

I built some pannier racks for my for about $35 out of 1/2 box, its ugly but they held up great. This is the bike loaded up

I had originally planned a route that was alot more dirt but just as I was pulling up to gold crown rd (a back way into josh tree off of 29 palms hwy) my GPS said it had a low battery and when I plugged it in the charger wasn't working so I figured OK I'll turn it on when I come to forks in the road but in the end the on off switch broke and was stuck on hold so no GPS. I went on because there where other people around, The road was sandy with lots of forks, one of witch I took and ended up in a sand wash that was very hard to get out of. See photo of very stuck bike

    And getting unstuck
    [IMG]
It took me some time but I got back on track
    [IMG]
until I got to a very rutted part and bounced my bike into the biggest rock I could find resulting in a broken turn signal
    [IMG]
Prays be to Alla I made it out and took box canyon to mecca for gas and then a few more miles to camp at the Salton sea

In the morning I got to see what I had been smelling all night the Salton sea!
I packed up and headed down the road a few miles to the small town/big trailer park of Bombay beach where on the other side of the dike you can find this stuff and a cool old guy fishing

The big part of the day was going to Glames dunes so I found cochlea canal road and was going to ride that all the way to the 78 but it was a very boring straight dirt road that I could go about 50mph on so I decided to go back to the 111 where I could go 80mph and get to the dunes faster. Then I got to Glames:eek1
    [IMG]
I went in as far back as the road would take me and road back keeping an eye on the road as I did. I had a 606 on the rear it did OK from 2nd gear up 1st gear sucked
    [IMG]
When I got back to the 78 I stayed in the sand and parallel the hwy until it was gone:cry
    [IMG]
I would have loved to stayed there all day but I wanted to get to Pochco before sunset and did just barley. Got these sunset photos of the Colorado river.

I set up camp and went to Yuma for dinner and supplies. When I got back I took this photo of the trees lit up by my fire
    [IMG]
I didn't sleep very well so I got up before the sun packed up and hit the trail
    [IMG]
Indian trail was the way back and was filled with lose gravel that tried to get me but I kept it up
    [IMG]
I had to decided to take a long way back or go back the way I came. Missing my wife, dog and Glames helped me make the decision.

After that I was ready for home so I got on the 86 to the 10 for a very windy butt aking ride home:clap

    I love this State:freaky

    Cool report!

I love solo trips, something about them.
You, the bike, the solitude. Its a wonderful thing.

Plus you dont have have your buddies bitching when you are setting up the Tripod and composing an image.

    Thanks all

Westslope- I'm using a Canon 5D (the old one) & a 1D mark II n for a back up and action, I would like a point & shoot that shoots video that I could keep in my pocket and could use w/o taking my helmet off like the Canon G11.

NewHamp- I love riding alone as well but it would have been nice to have some FF's to hang out with at camp.

Good one, man! Excellent shots of the dunes. The Salton Sea is so interesting until you actually get there and then it's just a mudpuddle of death.
