The 2nd Annual 3 Step Hideaway was a great success! The event which was held September 26-29, is the high altitude counterpart of The Desert Rendezvous that is held in the Spring with riding at lower altitudes that are not snowed in.

Lots of old friends (and some new first timers) came from around the country to visit, eat and ride in some of the best scenery the Southwest has to offer. What made this event even more special is the opportunity to honor long time adventurer Mark "Big Dog" Sampson for his many contributions to the sport of adventure riding. The event has been over a year in the planning, and getting Mark and many of his friends and admirers out to Utah and keeping the award a secret was quite the undertaking. In the end, there was a lot of great riding, fantastic food, and old memories shared and new ones made. The weather was perfect and thanks to many fine friends, the Awards Ceremony was very moving. Following are random photos and comments about the gathering. Those that have photos and comments to share, please join in.

My drive out to Utah from my home in Northern Colorado was simply awesome. And this was only the beginning!! Much more to come...

    Ride safe,

A number of riders were already at 3 Step when I arrived, some familiar faces that I had ridden with before, and some I would be meeting for the first time. All the talk immediately went to motorcycles of course. Lots of makes and models to check over and opportunities to test ride them. Let the fun begin!!

The weather was perfect for riding, tuning your bike or just sitting around, telling tall tales of adventures past and plans for the future. No TV, limited cell and wireless service was the perfect opportunity to just visit with some great people that share a common interest. The peace and solitude are addictive!

On the second day of the of the rendezvous, I was asked if I wanted to do a day loop with a group of six riders from New Jersey who had been in the area for about a week riding the mountain passes in Colorado. There were four WR250R's (including mine), one Husky and 2 KTM's. The ride was 162 miles
of mixed surface riding and varying altitudes. There was stretches of pavement connecting the trails which were made up of rocks, ruts and sand...lots of sand! With all the passes clear of snow, there were some spectacular views.

Most of the off road sections were mild to moderately challenging, but one particular section where there was a split off took some of us into a deep stretch of sand, washouts and even a water and rock filled narrow gully. It's always the more difficult sections that you remember most!

On Thursday September 26th, the day had finally arrived for Big Dog's award ceremony. During the evening meal, the announcement caught Mark off guard, as he had no idea what his friends and admirers were planning. The ceremony included a gag award relating to Marks' fear...err, uh, "dislike" of bears being around when he is camping. The second part of the ceremony was an award certificate recognizing him for his many contributions to the sport of adventure riding, and lastly he was presented The Silver Sprocket trophy. The ceremony also included some light hearted ribbing by some of his fellow adventurers. To say the least, the ceremony was enjoyed by everyone.

Thanks Scott and Ron and everybody else for the great memories at 3 Step.
So many good friends I've ridden with over the years------the list is long.
    Thank you all.

My wife Debi has rarely got to ride with me anymore and we got the Honda CB500X out for a ride to Newspaper rock.
She's never been in Utah and loves rocks-----lot's of rocks in Utah. We had been on the road for 2 months and enjoyed our stay at 3 step and just relaxing---------not knowing about the award ceremony that was to come.

Only sad part of our trip--------------Mark (Hairlip Dog) and his wife Ellen camped with us up in Idaho for a few days and we fell in love with their dog Sadie. When we got to 3 step they told us it died-----------Me and Debi love that dog and don't know how they brought it together to attend the rally.
    RIP Sadie:(
