Loud intermittent clanking coming from right side case when kicking or estart.
Kicker and starter chain look ok.
    Maybe starter clutch? Ideas appreciated.

    Thanks

    Not an Airhead.

I know the owners of many air cooled motorcycles want to use the term Airhead. This term was coined and used first to refer to air cooled BMW bikes built between 1969 and 1995 with the opposed twin cylinders. Where as you may call your bike air cooled, it is not what we call an Aihead (capital A).

Popular usage may someday change this but so far us Airhead riders have been able to fend them off.

Maybe not an "A"irhead but in my opinion is still an airhead. Alas, not a Honda part of the forum. I'm guessing this portion of the forum should be named "BMW Airheads". Too bad we all just can't get along.

Funny thing is, BMW's weren't called "Airheads" until the K bikes came along. That says to me that the term coined for the twin cylinder BMW's should also be used for any "air cooled" motorcycle UNLESS it's also attached to BMW, as in BMW Airhead. Or if you want to get fussy, any air cooled BMW built AFTER 1983 (the introduction of the K Bike) is an Airhead. So,... only twin cylinder BMW's built after 1983 should be called Airheads. Funny, I never even heard the term "Airhead" until well into the '90's. So, for me,... Airhead shmairhead it just shouldn't matter.

I don't have to win this fight. I just sometimes feel like being snotty. I guess I am snotty.

Then let's go back to calling them Beemers. We had a fight with the BMW car drivers that wanted to call their cars Beemers but we won that one. The cars are Bimmers. The bikes are Beemers.

But I've been in the situation of a conversation with somebody that calls his bike, a Harley BTW, and Airhead and I think it causes confusion.

OK, I'm a confused person anyway.

I didn't see the OP use the word "airhead" in his first post so I don't see what you fussbudgets are whinging about. He's not posting in "Airheads" FFS.

I would take a close look at the starter clutch, one of those three feeble springs may be broken and a roller is clanking around in there.

    Yes and no.

engine out, cam chain adjusted, cam sprocket, points cam and T on rotor all in line BUT points still firing about 40 degrees too early.

gonna try a different set of HIS points and if that Don't work then big $ for an E-ignition.

still haven't found source of clanking yet!?!?

Given the age of the bike, the screw heads are probably JIS. I bought a cheap set of JIS screwdrivers on Amazon and they really help prevent cam outs.

What about your timing advance weight springs? If your problem is at idle your ignition could be advanced if the springs aren't pulling the weights back.
