That would be real news. It’s been closed for years.

Conventional wisdom is that it will never come back, unless someone makes fixing and maintaining it a budgeted priority

It’s been closed for close to 40 years or so.

The Federal government and the State of California have been in a pissing match over it for the entire time.

North of Crystal Lake the mountains are volatile and prone to slides. The road has been washed out multiple times. Also there is a bighorn sheep habitat in the area. These days I believe it is barely kept up as a “road” but that’s part of the standoff between the Fed and State.

It’s a constellation of crappy circumstances that have kept it closed.

What you’ll find on the Hwy 2 side is a small gate that is set into high sides to prevent bypass.

Ive heard of people bypassing it and riding over it. My opinion is that gives riders a bad name. YMMV.

You know there's more to it when you can't hike or bicycle it either. And don't give me the "it's really dangerous" bs. If that was the case there'd be a lot more closed roads.

What are you thinking... secret government facility up there?

If you look at the satellite, a couple sections of pavement have a lot of dirt eroded from under them. I think there's a plausible concern that more of the road will surf down the mountain at some point. Would be bad policy for them to say people are welcome to walk on them.

Hot take-- if I lived nearby I would go ahead and poach it though. At least once, just to take a look

There has been recent talk about extending the road up from Crystal Lake about a mile and making a nice parking lot for the trail heads in the area.

Honestly, I don’t know how well patrolled it is. There are YouTube videos of riders who have done it.

The official line from the state is along the lines of too expensive to repair to viability and then maintain. The bighorn sheep habitat is also a reason why it’s been closed.

All I can say is the drop down is a long way.

We get out of staters in rental cars at Newcombs constantly asking about 39....on some rental car maps its shown open.
Hasn't been open for 40 years.
The guy at Crystal Lake café has the gate key and said he takes his son to Wrightwood for lunch in his Ford Escort...so it can't be that bad.
He has a key as its his fire escape route.
This is what he told me.
    I've never looked myself.

Last year, I hiked up from the turnout above Crystal Lake several times, went about half way to 2, while it looked like 2 full lanes, just not a Highway by current stds. Lots of very steep drop-offs, to put rails there like on 39 below lots of issues. A Caltrans worker said there is several overhanging tight corners without overhead clearance for Semi, Bobtail or Big RV, so will not be a "Highway" without that. The Bighorn Sheep habitat limits work hours, and explosives use.
Pedal Bikers were making the trip complete 39 to the 2, and returning during my afternoon hike. But there was several nice fireroad hikes splitting off from the pavement about 1.5 miles up. Found a great on, and I never continued to the 2.

Now a power emergency, (lines gone) has put temp diesel generators at a dozen places going up to Crystal Lake, and up this closed section of the 39. Posted rent-a-cops all over guarding the genis. Power for the 3 dams, and every other plug iin the mountians above Azuza are on generator power now.

    Love the 39 though!

PLEASE everyone....make it a ride to go visit Crystal Lake Café......it's worth the effort and he needs the business....such a nice guy. He will show you around his property and where they filmed some of the 'Hunger Games'.....plus he has cabins for rent. There are LOTS of camp sites up there too. The road up to him is not always open. A good detour is East Fork on up the back road to Mount Baldy or Glendora….it's not always open either. You can camp along portions of East Fork for FREE!
