April 2006, 4 riders with big thumpers decide to go down to the "Lac Iriki" in south Morroco. Sand storm, punctures and other mouchkil (problems), will make it different, it will be "Du rififi pour les vaches qui rient" (trouble for the laugthing cows)

Bikes are paked, Fabien arrived in the evening from Paris. The Freeway down "la vallée du rhône" is not to windy and we arrive in Sete for lunch. We are in good position to get onboard but the crew decided to let us in last.

We arrive in Tanger 2 hours late, and we spend lots of time to go through customs. To make up for this we have to take the Freeway down. We get out for lunch in a "bouib" and we are instantly in the Morroco that we like.

This is it, the storm has stopped and will be able to take the piste down Merzouga. But the DR wont start, after a few guess, Fab find the mouchkil :

Quick stop at the local Shop :

    makayne mouchkil (no problemo) :

The biguining of the piste is easily found, it's a large easy piste crossing a boring "plaine".

After a few Km of this my windshield crack and the GPS support I made also. We spend a hour fixing it.

we pass our first Camel heard :

We start climbing up a hill, the piste has been a bit worked up by the rain and our heavy scooters, make us sweat it up.

Quick stop for lunch, the place is great but we have to move on, it is allready 3 pm and still have 100 km to go to the north of Erg Chebbi.

At 5 pm we cross the forbiden piste. Change of plans if we want to make it tonight to Merzouga, we decide to take West in the Oued to get to a piste that will bring us back to the road to Erfoud.

We fill up the thumpers in Erfoud, the light is going down so we decide to take the road to Merzouga. It is night time when we arrive in "l'Atlas des Sable", nice hotel just by the dunes.

This is our day to play with the bikes unloaded. We first stop at a local shop to fixe my winshield, then whatch out dunes...here we come :

after a first....unfortunate attempt, Fab and is DR make a good run in the Erg. While cheering him up, we meet "mobilite kassi" (broken moped), with a bloody forehead after à good tumble with his moped. Nicou clean up the wound and we are invited for a traditional thé a la menthe.

The Big DR with the broken battery ground cable! Or maybe a F650! The accessories are kick ass, camera mount , fuel cells. The head lights may be aftermarket.

After a slow start we decide to take the road down to Taouz. The piste is easealy found, but after a few KM avoiding some 4X4 sand tracks I found myself facing a big hole in the ground, I keep the gazz full and grab the bike firmly.....BANNNNGGGG. The shock is heavy but I don't go down :wings . My knewly fixed winshield exploded on impact and both my wrist doubled in size :eek1 But after resting a bit and some heavy pain killer, we are on our way. We arrive on a sandy valley, the scenery is incredible, but riding our thumpers is going to be tought.

Not Exactly, the rally has also a different rear frame to support the extra rear tank, and the orginal tank is replace by a smaller one so the bike is finer. But with the rally rear frame impossible to have luggage, plus the 39l (versus 51L for the rally)is plenty enought for me, giving me around 800km of millage.

The videos are just grabed frame fromthe movie, sorry they don't work on line. If someone can explain me how to put videos online, I will be glad to do so.

This sandy area wasn't has bad has we expected, and the bike handled pretty well in it. We then try tu cut through following "au cap" in an oued, but after a few km of a nice run we had to go back to the tracks.
