I like Anchorage as a base because the riding is pretty good going both north and south-mountains and ocean south and mountains north and east. Throw up a tent in several campgrounds around the city and enjoy.

Unfortunately, you won't be see any fireworks anywhere in the state in July. It just does not get dark enough.

Seward. The Mount Marathon race is on the 4th. Town will be hopping. Barb

'Seeing' is a relative term....people still shoot plenty of fireworks......but, it mostl for the noise.

Barb nailed it....Seward is the biggest party over the 4th...you could camp down on the water and be close to town to keep an eye on your stuff.

If you're in a social mood, another vote for Seward here. They close off main street and line it with vendors as the Mountain Marathon starts and finishes downtown. If you like people it's wild crazy fun as about 20,000 descend upon a very picturesque town of about 3,000. :choppa

All the small towns have some sort of fun celebration tho.

    See ya, Mark H.

no offense to the Seward contingent, but Skagway was chosen by a poll of "voters" and Alaska magazine as having the best 4th in the state...and you can see the fireworks! just sayin...

Yeah, but do they have sweaty, bloody people falling down a mountain? (in this century) I think Skaguay is way prettier than Seward though. Barb

Looked at Skagway on the internet and it looks great. We are leaving SoCal on the 26th so that may work into the schedule better anyway.

    Thanks Again!!
